I left my lunch thermos in my truck for about a week and a half. It was closed and had a few  tablespoons of chili left in it.

When I opened it up, it stank like rotting garbage.

I cleaned it several times with dishsoap, and even ran some bleach through it.

It still smells like trash.

Did I ruin the thing, or is there a good way to get the stink out that I haven't tried yet?

i let them soak overnight with about a teaspoon of pure bleach and hot water - then I rinse the hell out of it and do the same with baking soda and water (I use the same trick on my gym water bottles).

Dang... beat me to it!!!

Another thing you can do is a 50/50 mixture of Tang and water. Tang is VERY high in citric acid and eats the stank away. We use Tang to eat up the mineral deposits in dishwashers.

If there is a glass liner only the seal and the air gap (some types have a vacuum between the liner and the housing)  between the glass liner and housing can retain the oder. If the unit can not be taken apart and washed, try packing it 1/2 to 3/4 full with fresh baking soda, lightly sealed, and let it sit in a cool dry place for awhile.

Try carbonated water too.  It's what Stainless-Steel food service equipment is cleaned with.

Use the tablets that you clean dentures with. Fill it with hot water, drop in a couple of tablets, ley it set over night.

Method to get rid of the smell… guranteed to work!

Hold Thermos securely in your right hand…

Walk to yard…

Open trash can with left hand…

Hold Thermos over trash can and release grip…

Place lid back on trash can…

See! Smells gone!

At about $20-25 it ain't worth the hassle. I would still see if I could get the funk out of it, maybe use it as a back up, but no way I would show up for work Monday without a new one!

wash with salt, vinegar and ice - swill it around for a while. Then use some baking soda and water and let it sit.
