There was a stong sulfer smell in downtown St. Louis today. They are still unsure where it came from. I was talking to someone that said about a day before the last major earthquake there was a strong sulfer smell. I am starting to believe this with Mt. St. Hellens doing things this might be a good hyposthis (sp? I can't spell). What do you think? Maybe major SHTF situation?
Here is an article: www.ksdk.com/news/news_article.aspx?storyid=67877

Went shopping, didn't buy tin foil. Damn.  Oh wait we're talking natural disasters.  Get under a desk after you seal the room with duct tape.

You should be prepared for a SHTF situation regardless

Do a little research on the topic.   Can't hurt, and could be interesting.

if they know there is an earthquake coming they probably wont tell no one to prevent a big evacuation.  st. louis is a big town with lots of revenue last thing they need is panic.  its not like a hurricane you can see coming.

My name is Doug Copp. I am the Rescue Chief and Disaster Manager of the American Rescue Team International (ARTI), the world's most experienced rescue team. The information in this article will save lives in an earthquake.

I have crawled inside 875 collapsed buildings, worked with rescue teams from 60 countries, founded rescue teams in several countries, and I am a member of many rescue teams from many countries. I was the United Nations expert in Disaster Mitigation (UNX051 -UNIENET) for two years. I have worked at every major disaster in the world since 1985, except for simultaneous disasters.

In 1996 we made a film which proved my survival methodology to be correct. The Turkish Federal Government, City of Istanbul, University of Istanbul, Case Productions and ARTI cooperated to film this practical, scientific test. We collapsed a school and a home with 20 mannequins inside. Ten mannequins did "duck and cover" and ten mannequins I used in my "triangle of life" survival method. After the simulated earthquake collapse we crawled through the rubble and entered the building to film and document the results. The film, in which I practiced my survival techniques under directly observable, scientific conditions, relevant to building collapse, showed there would have been zero percent survival for those doing duck and cover.

There would likely have been 100 percent survivability for people using my method of the "triangle of life." This film has been seen by millions of viewers on television in Turkey and the rest of Europe, and it was seen in the USA, Canada and Latin America on the TV program Real TV.

The first building I ever crawled inside of was a school in Mexico City during the 1985 earthquake. Every child was under their desk. Every child was crushed to the thickness of their bones. They could have survived by lying down next to their desks in the aisles. It was obscene, unnecessary and I wondered why the children were not in the aisles. I didn't at the time know that the children were told to hide under something.

Simply stated, when buildings collapse, the weight of the ceilings falling upon the objects or furniture inside crushes these objects, leaving a space or void next to them. This space is what I call the"triangle of life".

The larger the object, the stronger, the less it will compact. The less the object compacts, the larger the void, the greater the probability that the person who is using this void for safety will not be injured. The next time you watch collapsed buildings, on television, count the "triangles" you see formed. They are everywhere. It is the most common shape, you will see, in a collapsed building. They are everywhere. I trained the Fire Department of Trujillo (population 750,000) in how to survive, take care of their families, and to rescue others in earthquakes.

"My name is Roberto Rosales. I am Chief of Rescue in Trujillo. When I was

11 years old, I was trapped inside of a collapsed building. My entrapment occurred during the earthquake of 1972 that killed 70,000 people. I survived in the "triangle of life" that existed next to my brother's motorcycle.

My friends who got under the bed and under desks were crushed to death [he gives more details, names, addresses etc.]... I am the living example of the "triangle of life". My dead friends are the example of "duck and cover".

TIPS DOUG COPP PROVIDES:

1) Everyone who simply "ducks and covers" WHEN BUILDINGS COLLAPSE is crushed to death -- Every time, without exception. People who get under objects, like desks or cars, are always crushed.

2) Cats, dogs and babies all naturally often curl up in the fetal position. You should too in an earthquake. It is a natural safety/survival instinct. You can survive in a smaller void. Get next to an object, next to a sofa, next to a large bulky object that will compress slightly but leave a void next to it.

3) Wooden buildings are the safest type of construction to be in during an earthquake. The reason is simple: the wood is flexible and moves with the force of the earthquake. If the wooden building does collapse, large survival voids are created. Also, the wooden building has less concentrated, crushing weight. Brick buildings will break into individual bricks.

Bricks will cause many injuries but less squashed bodies than concrete slabs.

4) If you are in bed during the night and an earthquake occurs, simply roll off the bed. A safe void will exist around the bed. Hotels can achieve a much greater survival rate in earthquakes, simply by posting a sign on the back of the door of every room, telling occupants to lie down on the floor, next to the bottom of the bed during an earthquake.

5) If an earthquake happens while you are watching television and you cannot easily escape by getting out the door or window, then lie down and curl up in the fetal position next to a sofa, or large chair.

6) Everybody who gets under a doorway when buildings collapse is killed.

How? If you stand under a doorway and the doorjamb falls forward or backward you will be crushed by the ceiling above. If the door jam falls sideways you will be cut in half by the doorway. In either case, you will be killed!

7) Never go to the stairs. The stairs have a different "moment of frequency" (they swing separately from the main part of the building). The stairs and remainder of the building continuously bump into each other until structural failure of the stairs takes place. The people who get on stairs before they fail are chopped up by the stair treads. They are horribly mutilated.

Even if the building doesn't collapse, stay away from the stairs. The stairs are a likely part of the building to be damaged. Even if the stairs are not collapsed by the earthquake, they may collapse later when overloaded by screaming, fleeing people. They should always be checked for safety, even when the rest of the building is not damaged.

8) Get Near the Outer Walls Of Buildings Or Outside Of Them If Possible -

It is much better to be near the outside of the building rather than the interior. The farther inside you are from the outside perimeter of the building the greater the probability that your escape route will be blocked;

9) People inside of their vehicles are crushed when the road above falls in an earthquake and crushes their vehicles; which is exactly what happened with the slabs between the decks of the Nimitz Freeway. The victims of the San Francisco earthquake all stayed inside of their vehicles. They were all killed. They could have easily survived by getting out and sitting or lying next to their vehicles, says the author. Everyone killed would have survived if they had been able to get out of their cars and sit or lie next to them. All the crushed cars had voids 3 feet high next to them, except for the cars that had columns fall directly across them

10) I discovered, while crawling inside of collapsed newspaper offices and other offices with a lot of paper, that paper does not compact. Large voids are found surrounding stacks of paper.

The San Francisco Earthquake

The earthquake that destroyed parts of San Francisco and virtually all of Santa Rosa occurred at 5:12 a.m. on 18 April 1906. It was most intense perhaps a hundred kilometers north of San Francisco. We will here list some excerpts from the numerous reports, all indicating violent gas emission from the ground, gases that contained the poisonous hydrogen sulphide and gases that were frequently flammable. It is the earthquake for with the most detailed reports exist, and which shows every type of phenomenon that we have noted in other cases.

(a) Effects in Air

An extensive list of noises heard at the time of the shock, compiled from witnesses by Lawson and others (1908), includes the following: From Santa Rosa, "Heard noises in SW; then felt breeze; then felt shock". From Cotati, "Sound as of a strong wind before the shock". From Point Reyes Station, "Heard roar, then felt wind on my face". From Calistoga, "A rushing noise before the shock came". From Pescadero, "Noise as of wind preceded the shock". And from Mount Hamilton, "Sound as of flight of birds simultaneously with shock".

Other clear evidence for gas is given by a report published on 23 April in the Santa Rosa Democrat-Republican (the first newspaper to appear after the devastation). It said:

J.B. Doda, who came over from Fort Ross on Monday, reports that the earthquake caused immense cracks in the earth there, from which strong gases are emitted which make men and cattle sick.

Also, according to Edgar Larkin (1906), who collected a great many accounts, the odour of hydrogen sulphide was noted in the area of Sausalito. He also reported that sulfurous odors were pungent in Napa County during the night of the 17th and 18th before the upheaval, and lasted all day. . . . From many of the letters it is clear that the entire region north and east of San Francisco is saturated with gases of sulfur origin. . .

February 7, 1812 • World's End? Devastating Quake in New Madrid
Have you ever been in an earthquake? It is a frightening experience to feel the ground roll uncontrollably beneath you. What is believed to be the greatest earthquakes recorded in the central United States (although Missouri was a territory then, not a state) came on this day, February 7, 1812 and it was terrifying. Estimated at 8.5 on the Richter scale, it killed as few people as it did only because Missouri was lightly settled at the time.

People screamed as the ground rumbled, vibrated and bucked with a deafening roar. Sinners fell to the ground and prayed their souls might be spared. To the evangelical, it seemed the end of the age, prophesied in the Bible, was near. Christian slaves warned masters and mistresses that they were going to "catch it" now that the Lord was at hand. It certainly seemed that they might be right.

This was the fourth or fifth major quake to strike the area in less than three months. Everyone agreed it was the worst. A dark cloud of dust filled the air. The stink of sulfur was strong. The Mississippi River flowed upstream. The town of New Madrid, Missouri collapsed fifteen feet and was completely destroyed. An area 150 miles long and forty miles wide sank three to nine feet. Geysers of sand and rock spewed up through fissures and drifted across the land, leaving a soft layer so deep, a horse could not walk. Trees, houses and people disappeared into other fissures. Hundreds of acres of forest toppled. Stranded fish died when waters changed course.

In a Kentucky city, 400 miles away, chimneys slithered to the ground. Plaster cracked and church bells rang in Montreal, Boston and New York--about a thousand miles away. Boats foundered in South Carolina's Charleston River. Masonry cracked in Connecticut. Virginians reported they could scarcely stand up. Altogether, 2,000,000 or more square miles were shaken by the quake. The Bible predicts a mighty earthquake at the end of the world. The first New Madrid quake was also predicted--by the Indian chief Tecumseh. He said it would be a sign for the Indian tribes to reunite and drive the white men into the sea. When his words came true, thousands of braves joined him outside Detroit to give battle, but the predicted victory did not materialize.

Ironically, after the February quake (the last of the big ones, although geologists say another could occur) some settlers pulled up and left Missouri, Tennessee and Kentucky. As George Henry Crist wrote on February 8th, "If we do not get away from here the ground is going to eat us alive. We had another one of them earth quakes yesterday and today the ground still shakes at times. We are all about to go crazy -- from pain and fright...A lot of people thinks that the devil has come here. Some thinks that this is the beginning of the world coming to a end."

11 Some of earthquake signs that you mentioned in your website are very difficult to distinguish: for example, how can a person who lives in an apartment in can smell sulphur or hear underground noises?

Shou: No fund to overcome satellite data problems, I propose those knowledge for Tehran people against possible large earthquakes. Before the 7.3 Haicheng, earthquake in 1975, Chinese people smelt scent like sulfur. Before the 7.9 India earthquake in 2001, some Indian people heard noise from underground, and so did some Bam people before December 26, 2003. I believe that people can go outside to smell and listen to except having physical problems.

Well, if anything does happen, I know my town is teh fuxx0red.  We are sitting on a major part of a fault line branch, in NW AR.  Hell, the fault runs right under the vault of my bank.  And if something major happened, none of these buildings are rated for earthquakes.  It is a good thing that we only have one building taller than 7 floors in town.
