Which is better, I personally will always buy a ford because of the interior quality of the vehicles YMMV and I would never buy a GM becuase every button is bound to break within the first 3 years of owning it.

They both have their fair share of problems. I'll take whatever meets my needs the most. Thus far its been Ford, until our last vehicle which is a VW.
FORD. hands down. The only non-shitty car or truck GM makes is the corvette. I have owned 3 different GM trucks, and they all basically fell apart by 75000 miles. My F150 is at 150k, and still sounds, smells, and drives like it is brand new.
I am happy with my "Garage Man's Companion" (GMC)
but then again both GM and Ford have a garage out behind the dealership to fix them. |
GM hands down.
Every Ford I've ever owned or had the displeasure of driving had lots and lots of mechnical failures. My GM's have done far, far, far better. |
<------- GM 4.6L (Fix Or Repair Daily) or 5.7L (GM) You choose... And I've never had a problem with buttons breaking, etc... If Ford would make the Mustang look better (i.e. Get away from 'Where did the other 2 doors go, and where are your kids?'), and go back to a plain pushrod motor in the 305-325HP range, and FINALLY fix their AOD tranny problems, then I'd consider a FORD... But as long as the 'stang still looks like a cross between a relic from the past & a 4-door, and as long as FORD doesn't offer a Corvette-class vehicle in the same price range, GM it is... |
The worst GM I ever had was a '88 corvette. The engine & drivetrain was awesome, but the rest of the thing was falling apart around it. I also have '99 4Runner, and that is as close to a 10 out of 10 as any vehicle has ever come... |
as far as older vehicals GM is superior, they kept things simple, virtually any chevy engine will bolt to and trans, try to do that with a mopar or ford and you will be hating life.
Chevy= cheap, reliable, simple thats why so many people are running a SBC in fords, mopars and everything else. |
I have a '92 Chevy 1-ton cargo van, 5.7, 4L80E auto, with 212K on the clock...original motor, tranny rebuilt once, on its second AC system. Still runs like a MF, dosen't burn or leak anything. That van has been all over the CONUS [touring with various bands]. I wouldn't hesitate to go anywhere in it. The two Fords I have owned [Stang and Ranger] where POS. The Ranger [1999, bought new] threw a rod AND dumped the tranny at 100k. I've owned four GM trucks, all gave me better service, BUT... +1 on the 4runner... my '03 Tacoma 4X4 beats all the trucks I've ever owned combined. Far and away the best. BTW, my pops has an '88 Runner, bought new, now has 250K...still in showroom condition. One tranny, one timing chain, one AC drier. That's it. |

I've had (thusfar, just knocked on wood) oustanding luck with my 3 Ford trucks. OTOH every GM product that I had (with a possible exception of a 92 saturn [kept eating alternators]) was a mechanical POS. Too many lightly stamped parts that felxed far too much. Body roll was equivalent ot those sand filled punch clows. Their engines lose coolant and leak oil, and the friggin valves rattle! Grrrr.
Ford makes some damn fine trucks that are tough as hell. They will hold up too. ETA there's 400,000 miles between the three ford trucks I've had and all of them are still on the road. |
I work on both for a living. I would have to give the edge to Ford trucks. They don't break down any more than GM products, and tend to be less expensive to fix.
YMMV. |
I am not as hot on GM now that they have replaced the 5.7 engine with the 5.3.

Gm makes a good engine, but their electic sucks and their trucks are really pickups, a Ford is a truck. We sold our GM fleet and picked up Fords.
Depends on the vehicle.
My 99 gmc safari kicks ass, 4.3 engine 230k miles ,no problems My 97 f-150 300k miles, coil packs and plug wires thats it 4.6 engine |
If I wanted one headlight to work I'd go with GM...but I like 2.
I also hate DRL's...... |
Last car was an '89 Cadillac Brougham, current car is '88 Lincoln Town Car. For luxury, style and performance my vote goes to Cadillac, that thing was the coolest car I ever rode in. Of course mechanically it was one problem after another. The Lincoln on the other hand hasn't given me any troubles and is acting more reliable then both the caddy and my old Chevy Celebrity, so my vote is....GM...ford may be slightly more reliable for me, but damn GM has style.
GM Screwed up when they dropped the 5.7L (350c.i.)
IMO the 5.3 isn't half the motor the 350 was. As far as which brand I'd go for... probably which ever I could get the better deal on. |
find me at gunstock, i'll show you my 2001 silverado with 98,250 on the odometer, and how its just falling apart at the seams
I would say GM over Ford...every Ford I have owned or friends have owned have had either top end of engine problems and/or automatic transmission problems...
Has Ford learned to make a damn automatic transmission that doesn't suffer a total planetary failure due to poor design yet?
Former Ford owner. I buy Honda now. Before anyone hits me with the buy American stuff, it was made in Ohio. Remember the Alamo, and God Bless Texas... |
Only commies live in Ohio! |
in my opinion the only thing GM has over ford is their engines, but the thing is Ford doesnt need to spend the money to improve their engines because they make a damn good car and TRUCK already and have their customer base
Definatly GM.
I'm driving an '89 S-10 4X4 with 232,000 miles on the original motor and tranny! And It's still going strong. My friends '92(?) Ford F-150 blew up the motor at about 90K and he had to rebuild the tranny about 6 months later. |
I love my GMC truck--2004.5 6.4 liter Duramax (LLY), crew cab, 4wd, 6" lift with BFG A/T 315s on 17X7 rims, Hypertech programmer. Just over 7k miles since July. Before this one, I had a 1995 Dodge that I got 230k miles out of. I hated getting rid of that truck, but I'm getting over it.
80s and early 90s FWD cars were cheap and reliable. Engine and trannies swapped easily. I prefer VW to both though. Planerench out. |
put an exhaust on it, it helped significantly on my dads..................(and find a muffler shop that will install an LBY exhaust on it and cut off that fucking catalytic converter, its a diesel, you don't need it anyway!!! ) |
You're right--that's next on the list after the spray-in bedliner. I had a Rhino on my other truck and it really did its job. |
My dad had a '95 Chevrolet C-3500 extended cab with a utillity body, 6.5L diesel, and auto. He bought it used with 51,000 on it and drove it from '97 until '03, and heads blew at 180,000.
Never had very major trouble out of it. He also just bought a '97 C-2500 single cab with a 305 and an auto, loves it. Worst experience with GM in my recollection was my sister's '96 Blazer 4x4 that she just two weeks ago got rid of for an '03 Pontiac Vibe. Electrical, brakes, 4wd. She loves the Vibe, plus it has toyota engine, etc, meaning you can weld the hood shut and drive it forever. GM. but rembember, it's all about how you take care of your car. |
I can't decide.
Wait for it...Wait for it... Why don't you... ...Buy both!! |
I'm pretty impressed with my 01 F-150 so far. Not to sound crazy, but there is just something about it that just feels more solid about it (over a GM that is).
Having it buried up to the door handles in water, and having no problems out of it afterwards sure didn't hurt! (by the way, driving on back country roads during flash flood conditions is NOT a good idea) |
Oh, and a friend of mine said once:
"Chevy's are more glamorous, but Fords are just built better". This comming from a long time Ford owner with almost 200,000 miles on his F150, without a hiccup. There may be something to it......... |
Yeah...the 4.3 is a good motor, always was. My mom had an '88 Astro with it drove it 4 yrs and had no probs. Now she has '00 Blazer, powerful motor, its great. |
i don't think you could get a 305 in a 3/4 ton in '97, most likely a 350 |
NO...It's a 305. No offense...but I think I know what me, my dad, and the dealer are talking about. |
GM.
I still enjoy my '90 Regal with the 3800 series engine. The engine just does not want to die. Aside from a few sensor replacements, car still runs great. And of course, I really enjoy my '72 Olds. |
My 92 p/u has 236k on it. No engine problems ever. Original auto trans with no fluid changes. Still running like brand new. Do alot of heavy haulin" |
no its probably a 350 |
Ov vey...under the hood it says "VORTEC 5000". So there! |
no offense? riiiiiiiiiiiiight, you have fun with your 305..................... |
I was just fuckin wit ya |
The 305 kicks a**, it has the 3.73 rear end in it as well, my dad on the day he bought it punched the gas coming out of menards parking lot and almost squealed the tires!
You think the Bison and the Top Kick are pickups?
I can spin the tires without even puching it in my 4.0L V6 Ranger |
