My all time favorite TV show.
Unfortunately, I won't be seeing the movie with Ton Cruise as Crockett and Jamie Foxx as Tubbs.  Michael Mann is off his rocker...

Tubbs' weapon manipulation skills make me squirm in my chair. Look at that muzzle rise prevention grip. I didn't know they made M193 in .45 or 12ga. Now that I think about it, it's sort of like that feeling you got when climbing the rope in gym class....

I agree. The TV show has not held up over time. What seemed new and exciting when I watched the first run episodes, now seems played out and kinda blah due to the scripts. It may also be because Miami Vice's mood and style were copied ad-nauseum in the following years. |

I took a course from Matt Burkett a few years ago.
He, like so many instructors, usually starts out his class by going around the room asking people to introduce themselves and talk a little bit about how you got into shooting. Everybody was like, "I'm so-and-so, and I got into shooting because I wanted to learn how to defnd myself and family /My Dad or friend or husband got me into shooting/I just enjoy shooting..." and so on and so on. I was tha last one to go. I said, "Hi everybody, my name is Dolomite - and did you ever see that episode of Miami Vice where Ross Seyfried plays a hit man - and there's that one scene in the first 5 minutes where he goes from a surrender position to executing a perfect Mozambique on a guy in about a second? After that, I just knew I was going to get into pistol shooting." Matt's eyes light up and he starts nodding rapidly, "Oh yeah man! I just saw that episode last week! Cool!" Nothing Michael Mann does can be wrong. |

Two great episodes of Miami Vice, before it "Jumped the Shark" (around its third/fourth season.)
1. "Out Where the Buses Don't Run" - w/Bruce McGill ("D-day" from "Animal House") & David Strathairn. McGill played an insane retired detective brought in to help hunt down a once disappeared Coke dealer who beat the rap on a case he worked on years ago . Strathairn played his former partner. An awesome twisted ending with Dire Straits' great "Brothers In Arms" playing over the top.. My description doesn't even do justice to how good an episode this was. 2. "Definately Miami" - w/Ted Nugent. The Nuge played a psychopath thug in this one and did a heck of a job. Another great last scene featuring a perfectly matched song (Godley & Creme's "Cry"). I still can't get the image of cars buried in the sand out of my mind. That first epsiode mentioned w/McGill is better than most movies. |

I'll give Michael Mann the benefit of the doubt on this movie project. I think it will be OK, AS LONG AS MANN IS DIRECTING! If we hear later that Mann has jumped ship, well look out. I would really hate to see my long time favorite TV series turned into an embarassing comedy like the recent "starsky and Hutch" turd.

HEAT was a TV movie before it hit the big screen. Came out in 1989, it was called LA Take Down. It's the PG rated version of HEAT, pretty much the same movie, just different actors, weapons ( no FNC,the good guy uses a SPAS-15) and a few different scenes.
A big screen Miami Vice will be interesting, not sure it will be anything other than a third installment of Bad Boys...but we shall see. |

There was a TV show that was very similar to Heat called Robbery Homocide Division. Starring Tom Sizemore as the Lt. of his squad and had very similar camera work, etc.

Oh is that bad huh? I haven't seen the guy that plays Tubbs since the show left the air years ago. I enjoyed the show tremendously, especially the gun play. All of the anti-gunners back then thought that this show was a lesson in weapons training. I'm listening to the sound track from the TV show right now. My favs are You Belong to the City by Glenn Fry, In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins, and Flashback & Evan by Jan Hammer. |
