Herbert McBride served in WW1 in the Canadian army (he was an American citizen).
He was a machine gunner, but he also sniped and raided trenches. He wrote two excellent books, "The Emma Gees" and "A Rifleman Went to War". He was a competative rifleman in America, and the second book is basically a primer on sniping, something the Marine snipers discovered and applied in Vietnam.
McBride fired thousands of rounds through his Ross and SMLE rifles, and Vickers MGs, killing probably well over 100 Germans.
He didn't fire a full 7 shot mag from his 1911 (which his unit used). He only used his 1911 twice (IIRC), firing only a couple of rounds each time he used it. Both times he used it, he saved his life.
I don't think the people carrying all the pistol mags read McBride's books . . .
