Today my oldest son turned 18 so I decided he needed to own his own ar15 so I gave him a brand new rifle case for his birthday. When he opened it up I told him he could choose any rifle out of my gun safe. He chose a 16in preban, 6 position collapsable stock. I also gave him 4 brand new 30rnd mags I had just gotten from Tapco. You should have seen the smile on his face. Made me happy just seeing him so happy.

I wish I lived in a state that allowed a father to give his son an AR-type rifle. But I don't. You're a good father.
Geez, why didn't my old man get that kind of idea?
Nice gift, dad - BG |
I hope to due the same for my son one day. That is way we must fight now, sometimes it seems like gun owners are dieing breed.
hey I just turned 18 a couple of years ago, can I have a AR15?
You sir are a damn good father!
And his first rifle is a standard (no-ban) too? Dang... A+ |
My oldest daughter gets her first AR when she turns 10. Gives her two years to practice before hunting begins. Had all my kids dropping a hammer by two. They all love it. My three year old son's favorite activity is "playing magazines" drag the B.O.B. out, empty all the magazines onto the floor, empty all the cartridges onto the floor, load all the mags and insert every mag into and back out of the rifle one at a time......for two hours. This kid is a quick change whiz at age 3......Planerench out.
Actually I put one of the new $50 bills in one of the mag pouches. I told him that was for ammo, or whatever else he wanted. |
when i turned 18 my dad gave me his browning over and under, which his dad gave him when he was 18.very cool tradition.
You should train him to load stripper clips. I got two of my little bros loading ammo onto stripper clips by the thousand and they think it is a blast. |

Cool, I just did the same thing myself today. I ordered a lower and a no-ban upper from BFI weeks ago and the telestock which was on back order just came in today. My 19 year old son just got his complete rifle today and we are going to shoot it tomorrow. Good on you and your boy GM |
No strippers for the AR-10 that I know of. I am just getting into AR-15s for the girls in the family. Planerench out. |

I've got two other boys, 9 and 14 that go shoot with me as well. Now they know what to look forward to when they turn 18. I'll just have to think of a new way to suprise them when the time comes.

Way to go, Dakota!
I told my younger son I was going to give him an AR-15 for his birthday, told him to tell me how he wanted it configured. Then I bought the appropriate parts and I talked him through assembly. He is a big kid (over 6'), and chose an A2 buttstock over CAR stock, M4 handguards, 16" heavy barrel, flattop upper rx, and I gave him a NIB Eotech 512 for it. Then I located a fatter Lonestar Stowaway II grip for him. |
I got my son an AK when he was 15....Still in my safe however.

I have a kick ass dad, but one thing I wished he had done was get me a gun for a birthday. I have bought every gun I own. Oh well, he has made up for it in other ways.
That's where his will reside is in my safe for now until he decides to move out or gets his own safe. He'll have to get a safe eventually because when I get a new rifle I eventually end up getting 4 of each so I can hand one down to each of my sons. |
Use M-14 5rnd stripper clips and M-14 charging adapters.Hope this helps. |
I don't know about that. I don't know if I want him seeing some of the topics you guys post here. |

My sons are going to build up their first AR's this year for Christmas.
I can't wait. |
My dad gave a Colt Carbine Gov't Model for my 21st b'day, 17 years ago.
A few months back my oldest son (12) and I found a dirty Colt SP1 at a pawn shop. I picked up for $650 took it home. Trained my son how to clean it. Today it looks like new. Not his yet but it has his name on it. I found a Colt 4x20 scope and put on it. He doesn't know yet. So I have to do something for the youngest (8). I bought a Colt SP1 Carbine upper a few months back. Saturday I go to pickup a Colt SP1 lower from my FFL. And a Colt SP1 tele stock is sitting on my shelf, along with a 3x Colt Scope. My weekend project is to build his first AR. Ain't it great being a dad!! |

Way to go Dukota, happy B-day to your son. I gave my son a Colt M4 for his 12th birthday. He's now 16 1/2 and I'll let him have full possesion when he turns 18.
And don't worry Spitfire75, you can always move to Nevada! |
Man, this all brings a tear to my eye...
I'm so proud of you guys! |
What a great gift for a young man to have. It's a necessity, as we all know here.
Very cool. CMOS |
Way to go, Dukota! Lord willing, we'll be right there with you in about 17 years: www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=31&t=184817

You can get one of your other sons a precision rifle and the other a shotgun, or something to that affect.
Don't let your son stop there! Encourage him to save up for a precision rig, a hunting rig, a handgun, a shotgun, or something else. Dad got me started with a BuckMark, and Mom helped out with a Beretta and SavageMkII, but I've taken over from there for the most part. Your kids will get immense satisfaction from saving their hard earned money and putting it towards something that will last them a lifetime. I do, even though my AR broke the bank, and I'm still spending (withing reason, of course)! Plus, it gives me something to do now that I'm out of school. Keeps me out of trouble, you know. |
Sorry to get OT but,
@The1, tell your kid to put the stock of that M16 just inside of his strongside nipple. Then, grip the gun like normal (strongside hand on grip, weakside on forearm grip), and then lower both elbows so that they are at his side. This will dramatically reduce muzzle rise in F/A and make the gun more controllable. Works like a charm. Dropping the elbows kind of tightens the gun into your body. Of course, have him crouch a tiny bit, and lean into the thing as well. Also, tell him to be careful with that flame thrower. He might hurt somebody. |
Thanks for the pointers. Understand he dumped that 40 rounder in one trigger pull.... and that pic probably caught him towards the end where it was setting him back on his heels a bit. IIRC, that was the first time he fired it. --RR

You are a cool dad! My dad got me my own CAR-15 when I was 11, and I was very happy!
Just gotta say that is way cool! Too bad my dad probably never shot a gun in his life once he left the military...
Spoiled kids......
Anyone wanna adopt me? I had to wait until I moved out, got a job, and bought my own rifle before I owned ANY form of firearm. Life kinda sucks when your mom is an anti. |
There was a young kid shooting a auto M4 with an M203 when I shot at AzStan. I wish my dad had been into guns when I was that young.
