I'm installing a NVIDIA Geforce fx AGP 8X and a 512MB memory card. Can they be installed at the same time or separately?

Well, the manual for your mother board will probably say to only make hardware changes one device at a time, but in reality with modern motherboards you won't have a problem.

The last several computers I've built I installed all my peripherals (nics, video, sound, printers) the first time around and my first bootup had everything plugged in. Haven't had an issued doing this since my old Pentium 1.

Yes, you can install both at the same time. Put the RAM in the slots provided for the memory, and put the vid card in the AGP slot, boot it up, install the vid card drivers according to the supplied directions and your done. Now you can enjoy DOOM3 in all of its spendid glory.

Houston, we have a problem

I get "This device cannot start (Code 10)" when I try to install a new video card. How do I fix this?

The Code 10 error is most often a result of not having the option "Assign IRQ to VGA" enabled in your motherboards system BIOS. Please note: Making changes to your system BIOS can cause your computer to malfunction or become inoperable. If you are unsure how to make BIOS changes, don’t. Seek assistance from your system administrator or technician. If you are familiar with making changes to your BIOS, you may proceed with this section.

To enter the system BIOS for most PC’s, you need to repeatedly click the “F1” or “Del” key on your keyboard as soon as you turn on your computer until it brings you to the system BIOS. If this does not bring you to your system BIOS, consult your motherboard manufacturer or system manufacturer for more information. Once inside of the system BIOS, search for the option “Assign IRQ to VGA”. Check that this option is enabled and then save these settings. Exit the system BIOS and boot back into Windows. The error code should be gone.

I have this problem and when i looked in the BIOS this option "Assign IRQ to VGA" is not listed. WTF?

If you're old video card was in the AGP slot the IRQ should have already been assigned to the slot. Check to see the card is plugged into the connector correctly. If it is, I'd question the card itself. Also what's your operating system? 2000 and xp would detech and load a driver automatically once the card is working with the motherboard. RAM needs nothing unless it's more than the motherboard capacity. Otherwise it's plug in and run.

PS. if you're still messing with the BIOS you can usually find IRQ assigments under the PCI devices subheading. Then auto/manual assign IRQs. Of course it depends on the BIOS/motherboard

I'm logging off. have things to do, but if it helps. I'm running XP and my IRQ assigning is set to AUTO. Works great.
Also, I ran 1,024mg of ram for awhile but found MY system (P4 2gig) runs better with only 512... go figure. Good luck! --RR

Does your motherboard have an on board video card?

If so, disable it in BIOS.

Remove the drivers for your current (and any) video cards.

What make of motherboard?
How old?
What BIOS?

Some P4 motherboards won't work with non-matched memory sticks and will run slower.
Some motherboards / BIOS combos won't work with 1 gig of memory.

You might need to download the latest BIOS and flash your motherboard.

Error 10 means your computer cannot locate any video card. The only *simple* issue is if the card is not properly seated, or if it is dead from the factory (unlikely).

It's very possible that your new video card requires significantly more power than your old one did. The larger the fans and heat sinks on it, the more power it is typically using.

The problem is that most computers are shipped with cheapie power supplies that are just barely powerful enough to power the components it shipped with. Add anything that requires more power, and the computer will fail.

The solution is to buy a *good*, higher-rated power supply. I recommend Antec TruePower PSs, as they are among the only power supplies that actually put out the rated power, and they are built using high-quality components that will last a long time. I would be looking in the 400-450W range.

we need more system info...btw, SOME nvidia cards are very persnickity about getting rid of the old drivers. A buddy had replaces a GeForece 3 w/ a 5600...and we couldn't get decent performance out of it 'til we reformatted the hd and started from scratch. Even detonator destroyer (a program which is supposed to remove all traces of the previous drivers) didn't work.

Now, the fact that you're seeing anything at ALL means the video card works...so it's obviously a configuration problem. Let us know the rest of your sytem specs.

This isn't an OS issue; he's getting an Error 10 in the BIOS at bootup, which means the HARDWARE on the motherboard isn't detecting a video card. It wouldn't matter if he was running DOS 3.3 or Solaris; he's having a hardware issue.

Ahhh....Screwy video card capture problems will drive you crazy.
Download the latest drivers for the video card, download Windows Media Player 9.0, make sure that your input is selected correctly - NTSC, and make sure that you are using the correct video input type.

Ive tried to reinstall all video related drivers, i tried the asus, nvidia, and omega drivers. nothing seems to fix it. I checked the bios for any changes and it looks like everything is in order. I seem to see alot of people on google with this problem, but no one addresses it.
Anyone here have any suggestions?

I see this 'error' come up at least once every 6 months from someone, and 9 times out of 10, its because they have updated the gfx driver and either not updated the wdm driver or an update for the wdm doesn't exist yet. Try going back a few driver releases and see if that helps if you can't get it going with a reload.
