Good Luck,have an appointment with a surgeon tommorrow about a protruding disk in my lower back that alternates between an icepick in the back and numbness down the leg.been off of work for about 3 weeks and am going stirr crazy.tired of being spaced out on pain pills,just lay on my heating pad now and take muscle relaxers for relief.Please keep us posted!

A 'microdiscectomy' is a fairly benign procedure in skillful hands. VERY high benefit to risk ratio. Good luck and thank you for changing that heinous avatar.

And then I come home to find a note on my backdoor from the water meter reader saying that I have a leak. I walk/hobble out to the meter and the "leak" is gushing up out of the meter box and flowing down the yard. The 3/4" PVC fitting is cracked right at the brass housing of the pressure regulator. It just so happened that my father in law was on his way over to look at my 10 month old water heater that is AFU. I fetched and toted tools and materials to him while he fixed the leak. Then we go inside and trouble shoot the water heater. The thermostat to the bottom element is dead so I'll have to pick one up in Huntsville on my way to the hospital.
Man! What a day! Thanks for the positive input. |

I've worked ortho/neuro for too many years(that is why my own back is fubared) and can tell you that +98% of the patients that have this done will report that the pain relief from decompressing the nerve is so great that the incisional pain is nothing. Best of luck, and remember this: Surgery like this may be the ONLY treatment that has the potential to restore an injured back to a NORMAL condition, without any pain.
When you have healed to the point that your doctor agrees with the idea of beginning an exercise program aimed at strengthening your back, GO ON SUCH AN EXERCISE PROGRAM. It's a fact that a strong back is far less likely to be injured than a weak one. Muscles are very important in keeping your spine in proper alignment, and the stronger those muscles, the better they do the job, and also, they take the majority of the stress of physical exertion rather than your spine. Im glad you are having a neurologist do it .....
I've been thru it twice .... the second was 10 times easier than the first due to advances in surgery procedures and technology. You will be good as new before you know it. You will wake up feeling MUCH better!!! |

I was going to try to tough it out untill Christmas so I would have about three weeks off by taking four vacation days. My condition deteriorated over the last three days to the point of constant; nearly crippling pain. My manager will let me coast when I go back to work untill I can go full steam. I'll be in the office with the panties. |

I'm a doc in Morgan county and make most of my 'back' referrals to Huntsville. There are several good specialists in that field in Huntsville. You're in good hands!

I had the Microdiscectomy done last year. Here's my advice:
1) Your first night home, don't wait for it to hurt, before you take your pain meds (oh, it's gonna hurt). Don't chase the pain. Take the pain meds in anticipation of the pain. You don't want to be woken up by the pain, the first nioght, and then wait 45 min. for a new dose to take effect. 2) STOP taking the pain meds as soon as you can. Try not to get a refill, unless necessary. It may very well be, though. Vicodin can make it possible for you to be normal for a few days -it's a miracle drug, if respected. 3) Do your physical therapy religiously. 4) See a chiropractor (see several, to find the right one). You may be "crooked", and this might be the cause of your disc problems. Get straightened out. 5) Don't eat the boiled chicken they serve in the hospital. You'll puke it up. |

Good luck. I had back surgery 2 years ago and my back hurts every day. One disc was pushing my nerve into my spinal cord and my left leg went numb. They worked on that one and said the 2 discs on top of it are not good either. The doc said because I am fairly young, (32), he did not want to mess with the two other discs because they would all have to be fused together. I have tried everything from muscle relaxers, vicoden, darvacet spelling? to bacardi 151. I have had a lot of injuries and this back thing has been the worst, physically and mentally. Some days I feel like sucking on a 12 guage.

I'm back home. Standing to type ffeels funny! The gnawing pain is gone and all that is left is some musclepain and remnent pain from the nerves being compressed for so long.
