It wasnt uncommon back in the cold war. I knew people with fallout shelters and I bet there's hundreds of thousands of them.

I almost had a secret room when I was 13.  We were going to build a house and my dad was all for it.  It was going to have a Trap door under the carpet in the closet.  Would of been 12' x 12'.

House wasn't build change of plans...

I wanted to do that when we built our house a few years back, but it was solid rock where I needed to dig.  It was all I could do to get the basement dug out.

Just add a wall in the basement with a hidden door behind the bookcase...

Kinda "Hardy Boys" huh?

A year or so back there was this Grandpa aged guy that kidnaped some chick and kept her in an under ground room accessable from a tunnel in his house . I remeber watching them dig up the room on the Tube before I killed my TV .

I've always wanted a secret room that you had to go through a bookcase to get to.  I think I watched too many Scooby-Doo cartoons when I was little.

I almost bought a house with one. 120 feet long, went from the basement to a garage/outbuilding at the rear of the property, which was behind a woodline in between. The lady tried to sell it as a "storm shelter", but I knew it was an escape tunnel. You could see it pretty clearly, and I also noticed an outline of rust in a rectangle around the door in the basement, as if a large cabinet of some sort had been covering it up.

Kewl, but I couldn't swing the price of the house.

There were alot of them, but IIRC, most of them were dug out years later when things cooled down and became swimming pools...

Around here in the NoVA area, there's a few of the shelters left in the Lorton area....
Heck, the old ABM NikeAjax sites around here (or were they Hercules sites?) were all covered in dirt and became parks.....

Sounds like a good idea to me

My room back home is an old fallout shelter that was converted to a bedroom.
Pretty cool.  Literally.  65 degrees in the summer, 35 in the winter.  (Not connected to the house's Heating/cooling system.)

Ok, now how do I build a tunnel and secret room?

I voted yes, but only because its been on my list of things I'd like to have/do someday.

I mean, how friggin sweet would it be for your gun room to be one of those "tip book foward bookcase swings to the side revealing hidden door and tunnel" type deals.
