I've got this damn program that has somehow installed itself on my computer. I know it has something to do with the internet, because it keeps trying to connect when I am browsing. I delete the files, but they keep coming back. They are, at least what I have found, deleted, and shown up again on my local drive C: dir:

I'll be browsing, click on a link and at odd times a windows window will pop up and start "installing." Just as if you were installing a file. Then my firewall will ask for permission to access the internet, I click "no." Then the web page was was looking at changes to this message:

There seems to be a problem preventing you from proceeding at this time.
The error that occured was:

-Download error #2
-
-Please try again later.

and the url changes to:

I'm done my virus scans using both Panda and Norton... I've also done the spyware thing using AdAware. I delete the files and they just reappear later. How do I get rid of this crap.

You need to download and run ad-aware and spybot search & destroy. Get both from download.com.

If that doesn't fix it, get someone who knows wtf they are doing to run HijackThis to clean the registry.

 Do a little research on PC Hell.  I followed the directions on there to get rid of homepage hijacker and it worked well.  AdAware is only good for detecting spyware on your computer, it does nothing for finding what is allowing it to get there in the first place.  Try downloading Hijack This, its good for detecting spyware.  

So far, seems to have worked.

Folks, if you want your PC to be safe, just use them while browsing the web.  You don't have to install them on your hard drive, you can keep your existing Windows installation, and you can visit pretty much every nasty site you want to without worrying about your machine getting nuked.

Just boot the Knoppix (or Morphix, if your machine has an nVidia chipset) CD, let it load, browse merrily away, and shut down your machine when you're done.  No worries.

The exe's that are giving you the trouble are not the source of the program.  Trojans, viruses, and spyware are hidden way down in registry, or other hidey holes, and reinstall themselves on a regular basis, either on reboot, or just every so often.  This is why they resist removal.  The spyware removal programs find the source of this PITA and remove it there, cleaning it out of registry or whereever.

It was so bad that I had even switched to Mozilla/Firefox, and would still get popups with no browser open. after running those I run IE with no annoying problems at all.

If using XP, there is that system Restore function.  I have had a few bad ones, and after doing all of the above, it would still re-occur.  System Restore may help you find the way........
