A shopkeeper who was stabbed by a shoplifter said today it was “ludicrous” that he may be prosecuted for lashing out at the thief.
Colin Moore, 32, who owns four convenience stores in Norwich, was stabbed in the back when he chased after a gang who had just robbed his shop.
Mr Moore admits he punched one of the thieves but claims it was in self-defence.
The knife wound was within two inches of his spinal cord and millimetres away from his kidneys.
He was arrested and released on bail after the youth complained to police.
“They stole £70 worth of alcohol and sandwiches. Me and my mate went after them to try to get my property back. All we wanted to do was to apprehend them until the police came but they were older and bigger than we thought they were.
“They started getting abusive and throwing bottles at us. The knife was inches away from my spine, I could have been paralysed. I also had a bottle of wine smashed over my head and needed stitches in my ear.”
Mr Moore, who runs the family business with his brother, said his shops have been repeatedly targeted by gangs of youths for the past two years.
“We have had seven armed robberies, five assaults on staff and three burglaries. Each time we report it to the police but no one has ever been caught.”
Mr Moore said when police came to the shop to arrest him he thought they had come with information about the thefts.
“I was totally shocked. I couldn’t believe it, I was so angry. It just seems ludicrous that I get stabbed and it’s me the police arrest.”
Mr Moore said he had thought about quitting the trade a number of times but refused to let the yobs beat him.
“I enjoy being a shopkeeper. You make a lot of friends and get to meet people. What else would I do. I’ve been doing it for 10 years and it’s all I’ve ever done. I’m not going to let them beat me.
Sonny Pyatt, 18, of New Catton, Norwich, is currently on remand charged with wounding with intent.
Two youths, who cannot be named for legal reasons, have appeared at Norwich Magistrates’ Court charged with theft.
A Norfolk Police spokeswoman confirmed that Mr Moore had been arrested on suspicion of causing ABH and common assault before being released on bail pending further inquiries.
