US Donates Equipment to Customs Department

Amman, Oct. 3 (Petra-Jordan News Agency)--The US Embassy in Amman
donated an
X-Ray van to the Jordanian Department of Customs.The Autovan CX-160V
Mobile
X-Ray System was provided to the Customs Department by the United States
Government under the Export Control and Border Security (EXBS) Program,
funded by the U.S. Department of State.

The X-Ray van possesses sophisticated imaging equipment that, when
employed,
will increase the capability of Jordan Customs and other Jordanian
government entities to examine and intercept dangerous cargoes and
contraband, particularly items related to the development of weapons
of mass
destruction (WMD).

U.S. Charge d'Affaires in Amman, David Hale, presented the van on
behalf of
the U.S. government. Director General Mahmoud Qteishat of the Jordanian
Customs Department received the van on behalf of the government of Jordan.

Speaking at the ceremony to hand over the van, Mr. Hale said: "Advanced
technology is critical to the effort to prevent the
illegal trade in hazardous cargoes related to WMD proliferation".

The X-Ray van provided today to the Jordanian Customs Department is
equipped
with sophisticated detection devices that will increase the Government's
ability to ensure Jordan's trade with other countries is safe and secure.

The total annual value of equipment and technical associated board of the
royal school of music istance provided by the US
Government to the Government of Jordan under the auspices of the EXBS
program is approximately $1.500,000.
