Syria faces its own insurgents: Assad regime buffeted by unrest

Quietly, Syria has been battling a secret insurgency believed financed
by the Western opposition to the regime of President Bashar Assad.

Syrian opposition sources said the insurgents have been sabotaging
Syrian government and other institutions in attacks often disguised as
arson.

University campuses represent one target by the Syrian opposition
campaign. The University of Damascus has been hit by four fires in
2004. The Syrian regime has claimed that most the fires were due to
electrical short-circuits. The opposition said the fires were
deliberately set.

The targeting of universities has been no accident. Despite the brutal
measures taken by the Assad regime, Syria's universities have been
seething over the past year as students realize that they face
unemployment or dead-end government jobs after graduation.
Unemployment in Syria is said to exceed 20 percent.

In 2003, the University of Aleppo exploded into riots and Syrian
troops were sent to the campus. The students responded to a
presidential decree that ended Syria's longtime policy of guaranteeing
a job for each graduate. Hundreds of students were arrested.

They have an uppity Kurd population in the north and there was a week of "soccer riots" last winter in the north.  But this crap is happening in the capital.  I hope whoever's stirring shit up are western-oriented liberals and not Islamo-nutjobs.
