TX,

I just wanted to take a moment and give you a current update on my son SSG Jarrett Jongema.

As you know he is in Walter Reed in DC and my wife just got back last night from visiting with him. I waited for her report on his condition since she was there. He is recovering from his injuries which are as follows: multiple large shrapnel wounds to the chest, right back shoulder and right forearm and neck, the compound fracture to the left leg, and numerous other smaller lacerations to his face and head, all are healing slowly. His mother advised he is in good spirits even though he will be recovering for quite some time.

They finally let him call me by phone yesterday and it was a truly gratifying moment for both of us. His voice is weak and raspy, understandably so after what he has been through. He continues to improve and advised he may be moved to another room on Sunday, where he would be able to receive calls possibly.

He, and all of us want to thank you personally and AR15.com for all the prayers, well wishes and concerns for his well being and continued recovery. We are hoping that he may be moved to Brooks Army Hospital in San Antonio sometime in the future if he continues to improve at Walter Reed. My wife has stated he will be in for a long recovery. He and I talked of other things, he was glad to be alive, glad to be home, not happy at the prospect of a long stay in the hospital, and sorry for the loss of comrades in arms. I have attached two photos of him in Iraq in happier moments.

Speedy recovery, TexRdnec you are a good man getting him a HERO rifle. That is so cool Please thank his family for there sacrafice as well.

I was not around for Vietnam, but I have heard much about it. It always makes me mad (mad ain't the right word) to hear of our best putting their lives on the line for us only be met with harsh words and protests when coming home. It gives me so much pleasure I cannot describe it to know when he gets the Hero rifle he will know without question the core of this country is thankful and in his debt.

It is tough sometimes hearing all these "sqeaky wheels" in the media rattling on with their chin wag and giving the obligatory nod to "our troops" so as not to be jumped on. This token of appreciation means much to me. I feel everyone who has served deserves one. Everytime he looks at it he will know his sacrifice, and those of his fallen brothers, were not in vain.
