MOJAVE, CALIF. - SpaceShipOne will launch early Monday in a historic attempt to win the $10 million Ansari X Prize, the experimental spacecraft's team announced Thursday.
The flight, slated for 8 a.m. Monday, would be the second in five days for the American Mojave Aerospace Ventures team led by aircraft designer Burt Rutan and billionaire Paul Allen, the Microsoft co-founder. The
X Prize purse goes to the first privately funded human spacecraft that can reach the internationally recognized threshold of space twice within two weeks.
Wednesday's rolling ascent did not damage SpaceShipOne. Pilot Mike Melvill said he may have inadvertently triggered the unwanted rolls.
Meanwhile, the da Vinci Project, a Canadian team that once posed a challenge to SpaceShipOne is probably one or two weeks from announcing its launch plans, said spokeswoman Una McAvoy.
Its first flight originally had been planned for Saturday.
