I recomend theh Glock. Powerful enough to kill a bear, still handy in a fight, should you come across a meth lab or something. I don't know if thats an issue in your area, but it is in mine.

Take the 629. Even if snakes are unlikely load the first two chambers with snakeshot, the remining four with 240 gr. JHP.

If I ran into an angry lion/bear I would either shit my pants in terror or plug it with my rifle. I really don't think pistols are that big deal on a hunting trip. I guess if that Smith and Wesson is a 357 then it might be best, though I'd either take none or whichever was lightest.

I am getting too lazy to carry a side arm and rifle when I hunt and when I do get the energy to take one it is a .22LR MarkII. I go for practical because I haven't run into the tactical deer...YET.

Ruger, S/A, 7 1/2" .44 mag for the Deer (scoped/non-scoped - hunter's choice), and a Sig, Glock, HK, 1911, etc. for a planted sidearm.... And perhaps a small hammerless .38/.357 revolver as a deep concealment weapon..... Don't forget at least three mags per semi, and at least two speedloaders for each revolver you carry with you.

I have never understood the purpose of snakeshot. I have shot snakes with regular "bullets" and they have never had an issue with dying in a rapid manner. |

That is a very good choice, but really anything that will reliably kill a human will do. That will work on anything smaller than 300 pounds, if you put 16 rounds into it a Glock 20 might stop a griz- it will easily take care of the blackies and cougars found in all but a few small areas of the lower 48. |

Depends on where and how you hunt and what kind of people you may encounter. If you backpack/hike in a considerable distance, then the pistol is nothing but weight. It you encounter a bear or some other threatening creature (four legged) your rifle is the best medicine. A handgun will not equal it's combination of power, accuracy, and probability of a good hit in a stressful situation. Just always keep it close. Also, the farther in you go, the less likely to meet troublemaking two legged creatures. People are the most realistic problem. The rifle still has the above advantages, but a handgun can be concealed and can always be with you. In this case, it is what you are most familiar with and with which you have the greatest proficiency. It really depends on how much you expect to encounter assholes. If you really do anticipate that, go somewhere else and go with friends.

In WI your limited in sidearms. I'll be packing a Super Blackhawk or a SW629.
I'd almost prefer the 1911, ballistically insuperior but I get much more range time with it. I always keep with the law. DAMN! Deer hunting and running into a meth lab? That might call for a AR-10. |

This year I am carrying my USP45F loaded with Remington Golden Saber 185 grain +P ammo. The ammo is legal for deer hunting here in Nebraska and would make a great choice for a back up firearm, and just in case I get my deer at dusk I will have my UTL attached to my USP45. Thanks Arvin

I don't know if there are bears or lions in Nevada. I expect they are in the high country. With rattlesnakes it doesnt matter, they are all about equal. I personally tend to hunt in Alaska, and up there I have a .44, although my uncle keeps talking about loaning me his G20. |

I have a Ruger sp101 .32 with quasi adjustable sights that often goes hunting with me. It is minute of squirrel head accurate to about 15 yards if I do my part.
This little gun with 2 speed loaders and a Surefire E2 has given me piece of mind sitting on a dressed deer waiting for the truck late at night with 'yotes yipping around more than once. |

If there are issues with the 300's stopping power why wasn't anyone suggesting a 45-70 revolver with 530gr +P rounds? I'm reasonably sure you could even pull the bullets and reload them to a higher velocity and stay within safe limits for the single action frame.
Then again, I'd tote my ruger bearcat if I just HAD to have a handgun with me. Neat little gun. |

I carry a G20 occassionally when I deer hunt. I prefer to carry a .22LR pistol, however. I don't know if it is legal where you live to do so (game laws vary) but every time I go deer hunting I run into grouse and vice versa!
If I run into a bear (really unlikely) it will be a black bear and my .30-06 will do the talking. If people are a concern then the G20 makes a fine sidearm. It will handle just about anything that comes along. I love mine. Still, you have a rifle! Give some thought to a .22lr Best to you, Cheese |

I found this on one of the "10 ring" Threads on Glocktalk...IIRC Guy says he was using a G20 with 6" barrel and 220gr Hardcast..Of course it took multiple shots but this guy says the shoulder was broken and there are pics of pretty big holes in the Buff's heart
