I thought this was interesting. Those preloading HL2 are invited to allow Valve software to survey that person's pc hardware and then view the results compiled from the surveys. Here are the results ...

um, actually.... just follow this link

Made it hot for ya.

ETA:  I need to upgrade.  I've been running a P4 2.4MHz, 512MB DDR, and a GeForce4 Ti4400 for a little over 2 years.  I want new hardware!

I haven't read it yet but hardocp has posted a newegg "sponsored" $500 upgrade guide here:

Usually these guys have it straight.  I haven't read it b/c I just upgraded to a new video board in anticipation of HL2 (and have been playing joint ops while I wait) and when my P4 got too slow I did what any hardocp'r would do and OC'd Rock stable at 3.18 *fingers crossed*

Sharky Extreme has a pretty good gaming PC buyer's guide that they update every month.  They have sections for "extreme" ($$$) and "value" gaming PC's.  They generally make good recommendations.

I'm not real excited about HL2, but at least CS Source might make all the CS guys finally upgrade their P3's.

Get you some joint ops!! Rome: Total war is a lot of fun too.... if anyone watches "decisive battles" on history channel you've probably seen part of the game engine at work.. I sure as hell hope I'm not waiting til the end of November... I'm going to guess a more optimistic 1st week of November
