depends on the weapon and caliber.  Most .22s and ARs are 1/2x28.  3/8x24 is used on Walther TPH pistols and other small .22s, and it's a shitty thread for general purpose use.  It comes unscrewed a lot easier than 1/2x28 in my experience, and I have both.
