Lightning_P38 is right on the money.  Part of California is the eastern edge of the Pacific plate which at this location is moving northwest relative to the rest of the North American Continent.  The result is a right-lateral strike slip fault (San Andreas).  The fault goes out to sea just north of San Francisco.  Given enough time (millions of years) that portion of California west of the fault will migrate northwestward and concievably separate from North America.  Movement on this fault (and ancillary faults) is what causes the earthquakes in Cali.

Wish it would move a lot faster so at least part of that state would leave!
