Went to the range today with my Dragunov-wannabe SSG-97 in .308 to sight it in with the 8X scope that came on it. I was using Black Hills 168gr BTHP match ammo. My best group was 1.5" at 100 yards---1.5 MOA. Does that seem to be acceptable considering that this is a non-bedded gas gun?

Last week I also sighted in my rack grade SA M1A (all USGI parts) with the same ammo as above but using an IOR Valdada 4X scope. My best group was 1.25" at 100 yards---1.25 MOA. This too is a non-bedded gas gun.

While not "sniper" or "match" accuracy, I think either would suffice as a "Squad Designated Marksman" type of weapon. What say you?

Edited to add: both weapons were fired from a benchrest.

RPK's are sweet. How much does yours weigh and where did you get a 308 barrel for it?

What type of environment are you shooting in?

My dealer had it shipped from Inter-Ordnance in NC. It came in .308. Weighs about 9 pounds.

Environment? Local shooting range, 80-ish temperatures, little humidity, from a benchrest.

The latest issue (Oct 4th issue) of Shotgun News has an article in it by David Foitier where he tested SSG-97's in both .308 and 7.62 X 54R. Here's is his results;

.308
Black Hills 150 gr Ballistic Tip 1.46"
Black Hills 168 gr Match 1.37"
Bederal 168 gr Match 1.87"

7.62 X 54R
Wolf 148 gr FMJ 2.5"
Wolf 200 fr EXTRA Match 1.25"
Domestic (????) 174 gr Match 1.5"

Yeah, I read that article. Just thought I'd run it by you guys and see what you thought.

I did have one problem, however. The last round in the mag didn't come up high enough and was jammed into the receiver, pushing the bullet back into the brass. Until I have a chance to modify the mag properly I just load an empty shell as the first round into the mag and extract it when it jams. There isn't a bolt hold open anyway.

the psl (also called the fpk and now sharf schuetzen gewehr 97...hmmm...a german abbreviation on a commie rifle??? go figure1) is NOT a sniping rifle...despite advertising claims to the contrary.

neither is it a dragunonv, as you realize (but others may not).

it is a reinforced kalashnikov, long-stroke gas system squad marksman rifle and is deployed to that end.

yes, 1-1/2"-2" is about the best you will get. vertical stringing, due to the long, thin bbl. and tighly fitted gas tube is to be expected as the pipe gets hot.

pressure on the forearm will also affect repeatability of the impact point.

lastly, the gas piston mass also upsets the balance of the rifle at shot release...or, at least has some influence on harmonics depending on which experts you subscribe to.

as an all-'round shooter, the psl is a fine, economical rifle. it is sturdy, easy to service and maintain and any kalashnikov user can pick it up an go with it. an m24, it is not.

I'm not so sure I'd classify the SSG-97 as "economical"---at least to me!. The rifle, 10% dealer markup, extra accessory pack (4 more 10 rd mags with pouch and a bayonet), tax, and background check came to over $1000.
