I know this sounds stupid,  but the other day at work when I mentioned I needed to stop by the local meat deli to pick up some calf liver for dinner,  I got nothing but moans and groans.  Not one of my co-workers liked liver.  I was just wondering if I am a minority.

Well, If you are not a W.A.S.P.... Then, I guess so.

But all kidding aside and to answer your question, Yes, i think you are in the minority. Let me ask you this, is liver a taste that you sometimes 'crave' like some people crave Steak, Lobster, Ice Cream... I mean do you sit there and think sometimes ... "Man, I can go for some liver right now"

I just cant eat it for the thought of it being a filter. I mean, to me thats like going to your air filter in your car and eating that. Im sorry if I sound rude and disgusting. just my $0.02

Not "NO", not "HELL NO", but.... "FUCK NO"! *shudders* Eating an organ that filters garbage from the blood whilst producing uria (The main componant of urine) (It does other things too) does NOT sound yummy to me.

I try to stay away from filter feeding animals, aquatic bugs, brains and internal organs including the ones that have anything to do with digestion. In other words if it ain't carved out of the ass, back, breast or legs, I usually won't eat it.

My parents would make us kids try to eat liver once or twice a year growing up.  It was easier going hungry for the evening than eating it.

Later I discovered the only way I can eat liver.  Fried up with onions, covered with mustard in a sandwich.  Weird... but now I have a craving for it.

It is a gross mischaracterization to call the liver a simple 'filter'.  It implies that all toxins and chemicals that pass through the liver are stored and concentrated there.  The blood from the intestines does enter the liver before entering the heart, but this is to help regulate blood sugar, amino acids and some fats rather than let them get 'dumped' into the bloodstream after each meal.  The liver does detoxify certain chemicals as they *pass through* it, but then sends the partially metabolized chemicals along their merry way.  The liver stores large amounts of certain nutrients like iron, vitamin A and the B vitamines, especially B12.  Polar bear and seal livers concentrate toxic levels of vitamin A and, as a result, even a small serving of their livers may be fatal.  Some wild animals do concentrate some toxins because of the nature of their diet:  moose liver can have high levels of cadmium (from human pollution) from eating aquatic plants.

Liver is good for you.  My favorite recipe is chicken livers and a slice of water chestnut together wrapped with bacon.  I soak it in a mixture of lemon juice and Worchestershire sauce for an hour then bake it in the oven.  Liver and onions make a fine meal as well.

You bet!

Fresh liver fried in bacon grease with onions and potatoes. Mmmmmmm

But you have to be careful frying it. Not fried enough it's rather rubbery and gross. Over cooked it's stinky and chewy like old rubber. Fried just right and it almost melts in your mouth.

I've been craving it for several months but keep putting it off. Daughter doesn't like it and usually I don't cook big meals when she's not around.

I find something just WRONG with eating any organ!  Around these parts, fired brain sandwiches are the big deal!

Oh and hows about a big Head Cheese sandwich to boot!

I only eat muscle tissue.  I won't eat any organs (except heart, which is muscle tissue).  Eating liver, brains, kidneys, sweetbreads/glands or viscera is plain nasty.

Haven't had liver in a while. Not one of my favorites, but pretty good if it's not overcooked.  Liver and onions with gravy and a big plate of white rice.  I don't understand why folks are so sqeemish about organ foods.  In the early days of this country people ate everything.  They weren't as fat as we are now and they worked harder.  Fat and vitamins were essential to working hard and they got this from whatever part of the animal they could.

Now with the CWD in deer and cows I don't think that it is prudent to eat a lot of brains and spinal cord meat.  But stuff like mountain oysters and liver and the such should be okay.  I like barbacoa but they say that the mad cow disease can get into cow cheeks so I kind of cut back on that for a while.

My problem is I like stuff like Boudan and Itranitza(spelled wrong) czech head sausage, Head cheese, and all the stuff that is high in fat, which I don't need to be eating.

As far as calf fries or mountain oysters are concerned don't knock them till you try them.  I think they are better than real oysters, which are nothin but a sludge filter from the bottom of the bay.

Oh by the way all of ya'll that dont eat any organs that ain't muscle.  What do you think that casing on the link sausage that you eat is made of?  Most of it ain't synthetic.

Mmmmmm...... deer liver.

I gave up  chicken liver because of all the growth hormones I'm convinced get passed on to the consumer.  Maybe not valid , but  it's what I think.   Sheesh, 10 yr old girls growing tits and 13 yr old boys having to shave was not a common sight during  my mis-spent youth.

I LOVE liver, especially with onions.  I used to make an awesome sweet curry dish with liver!  Yum.

Now I want liver.  I think I'll go to the grocery store and buy some and make it tonight.  THANKS bri26064

If you think people whine about eating liver, try talking them into blood sausage.  It's really good, but somehow people think it's the most disgusting thing in the world.  I always ask them why they think steak is red in the first place?  (My fiancee and I are going to spend Christmas in Denmark this winter, and I swear I am going to get my fiancee to eat blood sausage!! )
