CIA confirms Syria deployed chemical and biological weapons in Darfour

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded that Syria deployed weapons of
mass destruction in Sudan's rebel Darfour province.

The CIA has obtained reliable information that Syria used a range of air
bombs and perhaps rockets bearing chemical and biological weapons against
African villagers in Darfour, U.S. officials said.

"The U.S. intelligence community has clear evidence that Syrian weapons
experts arrived several months ago and tested the operational use of a range
of biological and chemical weapons in Darfour," an official said. "The
results were devastating."

The officials said Syria used BW and CW in Darfour in June and July.
Hundreds of people were killed in the attacks, during which bombs were
dropped by parachute from Sudanese Air Force An-24 air transports.

In early 2004, the Sudanese opposition accused Khartoum of using chemical
weapons in the fighting in Darfour. But U.S. officials said a Sudanese
physician in Darfour reported the first credible evidence of Syrian WMD in
the western province on July 30. The physician reported to the government in
Khartoum that he was forced to close an entire wing of a local hospital to
prevent contamination from those killed by biological and chemical agents.

Later, many of those bodies were brought to Khartoum for examination, which
showed the casualties were caused by VX and microtoxins.

Syrian military personnel first arrived in Darfour in June 2004. The Syrians
monitored the effects of biological and chemical bombs and perhaps rockets
in attacks on Sudanese rebels and civilians. The Syrian personnel also took
samples of air and water following the WMD attacks.

The State Department has refused to confirm or deny the assertion that Syria
has transferred WMD to Sudan. A department spokesman said the issue was
being examined.

"We have seen the press reports and are not aware of any corroboration of
the transfer of Syrian chemical weapons to Sudan," the spokesman said on
Sept. 15. "There have been reports for several years alleging use of
chemical weapons in Sudan. None of these have been corroborated. We will, of
course, follow up on this latest allegation."

Earlier, Western security sources told the German daily Die Welt that Syria
tested chemical weapons in Darfour in June. Die Welt said dozens of people
were killed in the attacks, which followed a military exercise between Sudan
and Syria.

Officials said Syria has developed and deployed chemical warheads for its
arsenal of Scud-based missiles. They said the regime of Syrian President
Bashar Assad has also developed biological warheads.

In early 2004, Western intelligence sources said Syria transferred Iraqi
Scud-class missiles and chemical weapons components to Sudan. The sources
said Sudan had not been informed of the Syrian shipments and later requested
that the missiles and chemical agents be removed

Repeat after me: THERE WERE NO WMD's OVER THERE

I'm sure syria just accellerated their program and went from R&D to deployment of weapon systems in 2-3 months... BS

I haven't seen the use of WMD's on civilians by syria reported on CNN or NBC, etc... I'll keep watching
