I've always liked the 6.5mm Swede Mauser round - I wonder what it would be like as an alternate AR upper?

I'd buy one...I have an extremely accurate Mauser in 6.5x55 and it drops deer like nobody's business.

Great Idea.  I too am a big fan of the 6.5 X 55 swede.  I think it would make a great AR round.  Here are some more I would like to see chambered in an AR-15:

264 remington magnum
.270 winchester
7.62 X 39
.243

I believe Colt came out with a 7.62 x 39 AR.

Yep. The best general purpose round yet devised.

Yeah, the 7.62x39 does exist, though I don't know if anyone is actually making them now.

I thought I saw a .243 somewhere too.

Gunzilla - tell me more about the 6.5 Grendal.

A local gunsmith is building 6.5 WSM's on AR-10 recievers - I can put you in contact.

6.5 Grendal is a product of ALexander Arms, is is essentially a 6mm PPC blown out and necked up to 6.5 -- Think 7.62X39 in 6.5mm.

It is a fantastic round that is very close to the .308 at long ranges and can actually out perform the M80 (.308) at 600 yards. If you want to IM me, I can send you ballistic data and all that...

If I had a spare $1,000....

A 6.5 Grendel upper would be under my Christmas tree.  And dies, and brass.

Make that $1,200

FYI

Of all of those calibers you mentioned, only the 7.62X39 can be built on the AR15 platform. You might get the 6.5X55 Swede on the AR10 platform. The .243 Win. can be built on the AR10 platform, but the other two probably cannot be built on even the AR10 as they are quite long and probably will not fit. The .264 is actually the .264 Winchester Magnum, Remington never chambered that round.

I am going to built a bolt rifle this winter in 6.5mm 300wsm.  The ballistics are awesome with that bullet.  140 grn has less wind drift at 500 yrds than the 210 grain 30 caliber.  I plan on spending about 3200 on building the rifle.   It will be set up for long range.  Once I finish it I will keep you posted on how it shoots.

The .260 Remington is quite 'doable' on an AR10 platform. Was talking about getting a custom .260 upper on a DPMS AR10 from Lone Star Guns prior to their fire.

The 6.5 Grendel is the hot 6.* ticket for the AR15 frame size at the moment.  I've been looking for the OAL for the new .25WSSM that was just announced by Winchester since it suppose to provide .25-06 ballistics from its short case. OLY already makes .223WSSM & .243WSSM uppers for AR15s now.   If Winchester continues their progression(.223WSSM~>.243WSSM~>.25WSSM) to .264WSSM, we would definitely have a winner for the AR15 platform.

My 2¢,

wganz

I'm no expert in this field,but I have a Rem 700 in .260 Rem. That's 6.5-08. I shoot 142gn Sierra's at 2800fps and that requires 43gn of Viht N160. That load fills the case.
The guys that shoot 6.5-284 are using 55-60gns to get only 150-200fps more. They say that their barrels are only good for 1100rds. Mine should go to about 3000rds.
6.5 is a relatively small bore and that's a lot of powder to be burning in it.
I would imagine a WSM case will take more powder, but you still won't get much more than 3000fps from it and use a lot more powder in doing so.
It's the law of diminishing returns.
The ideal case will be more or less full when the optimum load is found. Those 284 cases have room to spare and the WSM case will too, and therefore as it probably has more capacity than a 284 case, will require more powder to acheive the same velocity.
I hang out a lot on the Florida Highpower site and this has been discussed there. I think one guy even tried it and said that a 6.5WSM gave up at about 800rds.
I've also heard it mentioned that .243WSM is only good for 200-400rds because of it's smaller bore.
The Grendel seems to be a good option considering what it is. And what it is, is a cartridge that was designed to give maximum performance from an AR15 sized rifle. And that's limited by the OAL length that will fit in the magazine.
But a 6.5 Grendel won't keep up with a 6.5-08 or 6.5x55 using the same bullet and you can't shoot 142's from a Grendel.
But you can build an AR10 in 6.5-08 or even 6.5x55, although inthe latter, the bullets will be seated further back into the case.

Not a lot out on the 6.5/300WSM, but with a 129rg bullet, it runs about 3100 - 3200 FPS. For me, the 6.5/284 is still the better choice... a LOT more info available, a pretty common wildcat chamber and runs only a few hundred feet a second slower (which I welcome for barrel life).

I recently got onboard as a dealer for the Grendal, I am having the website redone to showcase the Grendal -- I stick with precision rifles, those that know my background know that, and the 6.5G has breathed new life into the "poodle shooter" for this role...

The 6.5G can get a 100 - 110gr pill up close to 2900fps... but the 123gr runs at a very reasonable 2600 -- the kicker is, it is still on the plus side of 2000 at 300 yards -- the lil' Grendal packs about the same energy at 300 yards that M262 does at the muzzle!

I have always been a fan of the 6.5mm bore, for a long time called the most efficient rifle bore size...

Thought that there was significant difference in the OAL between the WSSM and WSM family. The two early  WSSM family cartridges would fit into an AR15(see earlier link to OLY arms).

Thanks for the info I might just go with the 30 caliber bullet.  Hell I dont know I just dont want to spend all the money on a match rifle and have the barrel tear up in no time.  I have some serious homework to do.  Thanks

25 round LEO magazines for the 6.5 Grendel are also now available. (to the public depending on your state laws)

They are also coming out with a 17-18 round mag based on the 20 round 5.56 mag.

Additionally there will be a 22 round mag for the 6.5 Grendel which protrudes to the same length as the pistol grip when inserted.

6.4 Grendel commercial ammo available also includes a 144gr in addition to the 123gr and 109gr loads.
