Deputy, wife on mend from hammer attack

HESPERIA — A couple attacked by a man armed with a hammer inside their home earlier this week were identified as a reserve sheriff's deputy and his wife.

Though Reserve Deputy Randy Herold had been struck on the head multiple times in the attack, he still managed to make his way outside and call for help on the sheriff's radio in his truck before losing consciousness, said his sister, Lisa Savage.

"He received too many stitches to count, and lost enough blood to require a transfusion," Savage said. "He was hit in the same spot over and over, leaving him with a gaping hole."

Sgt. Paul Howe of the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department confirmed Thursday that Herold is a reserve deputy with the sheriff's Aviation Division in San Bernardino. He said Herold is an air rescue medic.

"He basically responds to any kind of emergency or search and rescue in the county," Howe said.

Savage identified the other victim as Herold's wife, Cecilia. Savage said the couple were married in April.

The two were attacked in their home on Monday by Carlos Hernandez, 20, according to reports from the Sheriff's Department. Hernandez was assisting his father-in-law who had been hired by the Herolds to perform some home repairs when the attack occurred, sheriff's deputies said.

"My brother was on the couch when his wife brought him some water. Hernandez was crouched behind the couch, and they didn't know," Savage said. "The kid got up and repeatedly hit them with the hammer."

Randy Herold was released from Loma Linda University Medical Center on Thursday and is in Laguna Beach recovering at the home of a family member, Savage said.

He will celebrate his 47th birthday Saturday.

Hernandez was arrested without incident at the couple's home in the 8900 block of G Avenue, deputies said.

He was booked into Victor Valley Jail on suspicion of attempted murder and suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, deputies said.

Sgt. Larry Bowman of the Hesperia sheriff's station said Thursday that investigators are still unclear what motivated the attack.

Oh shit....there will be an "Assault hammer" ban being written up in the next few days.....

I remember the good old days when this kind of jackass always resisted arrest.

Ordinary citizens have no need for such a deadly device.  Only trained professionals should be alowed to buy them.



1.  What kind of idiot attacks a LEO in his home with a hammer?  Talk about bringing a hammer to a gunfight.
