It happened at about 10:30 a.m. outside Gate 2 at Hinkle Fieldhouseon the 4600 block of Sunset Avenue.
Indianapolis police officials described the suspect as a black male with glasses and around 5 feet 7 or 8 inches tall with a medium build. He was reportedly wearing a black tank top, khaki shorts and a baseball hat when he fled from the scene.
Police have set up a perimeter around the area and eight schools have been locked down in the area during the search for the shooter, RTV6's Derrik Thomas reported.
Police said the officer was called to Hinkle Fieldhouse after receiving a call of a suspicious person. The officer questioned the suspect, and at some point, witnesses reported hearing a gunshot.
The male suspect reportedly took the officer's gun, Thomas reported.
The Indianapolis Public Schools on lockdown include school No. 43, 55, 70, 84, 91, Merle Sidener Middle School, Shortridge Middle School and Broad Ripple High School. "
Officer James Davis, 31, was later pronounced dead at Methodist Hospitals.
This is the 2nd officer in the city of Indianapolis in less than a month.
