Not a very veiled attempt at humor.  That's a racist joke.  

Buffalo soldiers were black.  They suffered the worst since they were the lowest priority unit to be resupplied.  How that can be funny and "dark" escapes me.

Uh, see the movie. It was not about the Buffalo Soldiers of the 19th Century (9th and 10th Cavalry, 24th and 25th Infantry). It was about Joaquim Phoenix, a scam artist and criminal company clerk in the Army in the late 1980s at the close of Cold War, in Germany. Very good movie, and very dark humor, no pun intended.
