Woman, Baby Found Slain in Conn. Park

NEW MILFORD, Conn. (AP) - A woman and her baby son - his body still strapped in a stroller - were found stabbed to death in a park along the Housatonic River in western Connecticut, state police said.

The bodies of Lisa Aviles, 31, and her 4-month-old son, Damion Stone, were found Tuesday night along a walking trail in Lovers Leap State Park by two fishermen, police said. The baby was in his stroller; Aviles' body was found nearby.

Police identified a ``person of interest'' Wednesday evening, and were awaiting search and arrest warrants from a judge.

Police have described the homicides as gruesome and say witnesses reported hearing screams.

``In my 30 years as a state trooper, I've never seen a scene that was so horrific,'' said state police spokesman Sgt. J. Paul Vance.

Autopsies Wednesday showed both victims died of multiple stab wounds.

The discovery set off a hunt Wednesday with dog teams, all-terrain vehicles and an inflatable boat. Off-duty officers were called to the scene and state troopers from several barracks were aiding the investigation.

``It's startling,'' said resident Keith Mitchell, who said he often visits the park and was there Tuesday. ``I come here for peace and quiet to relax. It's not a place for anxiety and fear.''

The killings followed a slaying earlier in the week in New Milford, a town of 24,000 people. No arrests have been made in that case. Vance said there was ``absolutely no connection.''

Just when I thought I was as pissed off as I could be,(about the beheadings) this happens.

GREEN BAY, Wisconsin (AP) -- A man being chased by sheriff's deputies dropped his fiancee's 8-month-old daughter out of a moving car, sending the baby tumbling across the highway in her car seat.

The girl was unhurt, but the man later was fatally injured in a crash.

Dana Bettin, 23, died Sunday, three days after the highway chase that ended when he crashed his 17-year-old fiancee's car into an unoccupied squad car.

Deputies began chasing Bettin after he was accused of domestic violence at a local hotel. By the time officers arrived, he had already left with the girlfriend's baby in the car.

During the chase, Bettin slowed to about 10 mph, opened the car door and dropped the baby out in her car seat, which slid, spun and tipped over, sheriff's Sgt. Dan Pamenter said.

Pamenter said the child was "crying a little bit" but calmed down when he picked her up and put her in his car.

"She didn't have a scratch on her," he said. "She wasn't even dirty. She had on these little pajama things. She was just as content as any baby."

The chase continued at up to 100 mph, ending when Bettin's car crashed, rolled over and pinned him underneath. He died at a hospital in Green Bay.

Sgt. David Catalano said that he spoke to the baby's mother on Monday and that the girl was doing fine. "I am so pleased the baby was not hurt. That was a huge relief. I couldn't believe my eyes," he said.

Catalano said he had been told that Bettin was not the father of the child.

(New Milford-AP Sept. 23, 2004 8:00 AM) _ A 29-year-old New Milford man is being held on murder charges in the stabbing deaths of his girlfriend and their four-month-old son.

David Stone was charged early today in the killings of 31-year-old Lisa Aviles of New Milford and her baby son, Damion Stone.

Stone is being held on two million dollars bond and is to be arraigned in Litchfield Superior Court. He's charged with two counts of murder and two counts of capital felony.

The bodies of the woman and the baby were found just before eight o'clock Tuesday night on a hiking trail.

Autopsies confirmed that both victims died of multiple stab wounds.

Fishermen found the bodies after hearing screams for help shortly before the bodies were found.

Damnit I hope someone finds this guy before the cops do and gives him a good thrashing...  I suggest slow bleeding out by means of dental pick punctures.

That is just sad. I am more furious reading things like this than I am about the beheadings in Iraq. Atleast people who go there know what can happen to them if they are not careful. A mother and her baby strolling through a park in America however, should be perfectly safe in doing so. Things like this further harden my conviction. True evil walks this planet every day and I refuse to be complacent about it. These are the things to show the people who have the nerve to question our reasoning for owning /carrying defensive firearms. How anyone can read that article and further question our intent is simply beyond me.

The sadder part is it will cost the taxpayers $100K plus to put him in jail only to have Bubba off him for a magazine and some soap.
