I believe he allowed himself to be decieved when he failed to sufficiently research the authenticity of the documents.  He went on the air like Baghdad Bob and told America nothing more than fabricated bullshit.

I certainly voted yes, fire him.

Dan Rather's crime was to be so anxious to report some negative about Bush;

He hired a signature expert to look at a copied document when he himself said earlier that doing such a thing was foolish

He ignored and lied about the testimony of those it did hire.

He did not interview (in the beginning) anyone directly connected with Lt. Col. Jerry Killian, purported author of the memos.

He did not inform viewers that Col. Walter Staudt had retired a year and a half before the time he was supposedly trying to "sugarcoat" Bush's record

He failed to inform viewers that not a single verified document signed by Killian or his fellow officers during the time period used the typographical techniques used in the CBS memos.

He failed to even know who producer Mary Mapes document source was before the broadcast.

He dishonestly impugned the motives of critics.

He never once featured a single document expert on the air who doubted CBS' claims.

He never mentioned that Killian never kept notes and hated to type.

He did not find out if the office in which Killian worked even had a typewriter capable of duplicating most of the complex formatting used in the CBS documents (it did not).

He used the testimony of a vehemently anti-Bush author to prove its case and simply referring to him as an author who "wrote two books on the subject".

He failed to inform viewers that its document source was someone who hated George Bush.

He failed to tell viewers that one of its key sources (if not the key) was a man known to be mentally unstable and one who has lodged false accusations against Bush for years.

WELL BEYOND FOOLED, HE WAS AN ACCOMPLICE

Hopefully after November 2nd someone will show some balls and arrest him for illegally attempting to affect a presidential election with forged documents.  That is still a felony I believe.  Maybe he'll get the cell next to Burkett.

I voted yes, but as long as CBS has finally been shown to unreliable, maybe he should just stay.  If he left he would just turn up on some cable news channel anyway.

I do believe that there was an effort by CBS to discredit the President using these documents. Once it was evident (to everyone but CBS) that the documents were forged, CBS could not back off because they wanted it to be true so bad they couldn't admit it wasn't.  There is a term for that conceptual fault, but I can't remember the exact name.

Big + 1,  He was ready and willing to 'run' with anything that would hurt Bush,  after all he said that his source was 'highly credible'  when in fact he was a well known bush basher with an axe to grind, as a veteran 'news man' (term used loosely) he should have known that further scrutiney was needed before running the story.  As such he deserves what ever he gets and more, the news is supposed to be unbiased and factual, Blather is neither...

I don't think he should be fired, but I do think he should be laughed out of the "news business".  He displayed an amazing lack of journalistic judgement by not following up the accusations by investigating further.  His adamant denial of the possibility that the documents could be false, without making sure that his statement would hold up to scrutiny, proves that Dan Rather's days as a news man are numbered.

CBS should hire Baghdad Bob as their spokesman, he has just as much credibility.

55% to give him the axe.

He should not only be fired but keel hauled, hung,shot and then be stripped of the fact he WAS a Marine( he soiled the uniform).
