The song is pretty catchy sounding, but WTF is up with the lyrics?

THE ROOTS LYRICS

"The Seed (2.0)"
(feat. Cody Chesnutt)

[Verse 1: Black Thought]
Knocked up 9 months ago
And what she finna have she don't know
She want neo-soul, this hip-hop is old
She don't want no rock-n-roll
She want platinum or ice or gold
She want a whole lotta somethin' to fold
If you a obstacle she just drop ya cold
Cuz one monkey don't stop the show
Little Mary is bad
In these streets she done ran
E'er since when the heat began
I told the girl look here
Calm down I'ma hold your hand
To enable you to peep the plan
Cuz you is quick to learn
And we can make money to burn
If you allow me the latest game
I don't ask for much, but enough room to spread my wings
And the world finna know my name

[Verse 2: Cody Chesnutt]
I don't ask, for much these days
And I don't bitch, and whine, if I don't get my way
I only wanna fertilize another behind my lover's back
I sit and watch it grow standin' where I'm at
Fertilize another behind my lover's back

And I'm keepin' my secrets mine
I push my seed in her push for life
Its gonna work because I'm pushin' it right
If Mary drops my baby girl tonight
I would name her Rock-N-Roll

[Verse 3: Black Thought]
Uh-huh
Cadillac need space to roam
Where we headin for she don't know
We in the city where the pros shake rattle and roll
And I'm a gaddang rollin' stone
I don't beg I can hold my own
I don't break I can hold the chrome
And this weighin' a ton and I'm a son of a gun
My code name is The Only One and Black Thought is bad
These streets he done ran ever since when the game began
I never played the fool
Matta fact I be keepin' it cool
Since money been changing hands
And I'm left to shine, but the legacy that I leave behind be the seed
that'll keep the flame
I don't ask for much but enough room to spread these wings
And the world finna know my name

[Verse 4: Cody Chesnutt]
I don't beg
For no rich man
And I don't scream, and kick, when his shit don't fall in my hands, man
Cuz I know how to still
Fertilize another against my lover's will
I lick the opposition cuz she don't take no pill
Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-no dear
You'll be keeping my legend alive
I push my seed in her push for life

Its gonna work because I'm pushin' it right
If Mary drops my baby girl tonight
I would name her Rock-N-Roll
Oh-ooh break it down, break it down, break down beat

[break]
I push my seed somewhere deep in her chest
I push it naked cuz I've takin my test
Deliverin' Mary it don't matter the sex

I'm gon' name it rock and roll
I push my seed in my push for life
It's gonna work becuz I'm pushin it right
If Mary drop my baby girl, tonight
I would name her Rock-N-Roll
I would name her Rock-N-Roll
I would name her Rock-N-Roll yeah
I would name it Rock-N-Roll

Is this mentality the reason so many kids are being born without their dad around?

I remember when those guys were a high school jazz group.  I think they were called the "square roots".  Lyrics are just lyrics.  They're good guys from what I hear.

Yea I listen songs with really messed up lyrics usually, but something about knocking up numerous girls to "keep my legend alive" seems pretty fucked up to me.

Pop culture is full of this shit.  What can we list as modern family values? Promiscuous sex?  Child-birth out of wedlock?  Flagrant drug use?  Conspicuous consumption?  Avarice?

I've already priced the lumber for my plywood shack in Montana.  Fuck modernity.

The Roots are pretty good tho.  They're playing here sometime next week and I might check them out.  I've been digging music while disagreeing with the message for a long time, tho.

Every man is in favor of promiscuous sex and I don't really have any problems w/drug use.  I just don't like to see it on MTV every goddamn day.  Well, not that I've watched MTV in ten years, but yanowhaI'msayin.   It's one thing for adults to get high and fuck.  Societal values are there to make kids behave.  Me, I like both kinds of music-country AND western.

I quess Im not a fan of it, I see too many dumbasses who all have 1 thing in common, they are drug users, it just seems to make people worthless, and lazy.

I dont even care much anymore about getting laid or meeting a woman, I dont see much of a point in it anymore.

I dont listen to much music and havent watched MTV since 1998 or so.

I also have been to Montana and would be there if I could find a job there.

Many drug users are dumbasses, but I can't say I've met a whole lot of drug-using dumbasses who were squared away before they started using drugs.   I've not seen a drug-using dumbass who doesn't drink beer, but that doesn't neccesarily make me relate beer drinking to dumbassedness.  Drug and alcohol use is something that's appropriate in moderation, like most else.  If people can keep their vices under control it'd be different.  But pop culture today is all about being a FLAGRANT piece of shit.

I like women too.  Well, I like the ideal of women.  Most women are also dumbasses.  I have not, however, yet begun to fight, and I would encourage you to persevere.

Bluegrass is good.  MTV sucks.

I totally agree with you on Montana, and Wyoming, and Idaho, and Alaska, and Arizona, and West Virginia, and a dozen other places I'd like to live.

I havn't watched MTV for years (born and raised without cable TV) and I've also pretty much said "fuck it" when it comes to girls.  To many psychos and mind games to put up with.  As for drug users being worthless, that varies.  Alot of pot users here are cool people who live normal lives while others are 100% pot heads who plan their lives on smoking up.  All the while I've known serious drug users who are pretty successful.  One tattoo artist I knew hit the rock, yet still brought in way more then 100K a year and one of friends dad chased the dragon and makes millions in the fashion industry.

I knew a few of these people before they started, some of them used to be reliable, know what they were doing and had some motivation.  Now all they will do it watch TV and work (sometimes) just enough to get some drug money.  They normally wont even have a way to get around other then begging rides off of people.

So they work 2 maybe 3 days a week, pay thier probation, or rent have maybe $50 left which $25-30 goes for drugs for the week, the rest goes for food.  More money then that they go buy some clothes they saw on TV.

Yeah, there's shitbags everywhere, tho.  I know two girls going for their PhD's at Ivy League institutions who are both daily pot smokers.  I know drug users who've made a million dollars before their thirtieth birthdays in completely legit businesses.  I've known people who've never taken a toke who are on welfare.  It's the person, not the substance.

You get lots of fatherless kids as a logical extension of 'Would U HIt It?'...

When folks spend all this time trying to 'hit' as much as they can, occasionally you get side effects, either kids or STDs...
