Not often I post topics like this - but what "Trilogy" do you think is best?
LOTR, or, the Star Wars (first) Trilogy? The newest "add-ons/prequels" to the Star Wars Trilogy, as I like to call them, I will not include here - because IMHO they don't even qualify. I like both Trilogies very much; but I give the overall Class and Character to LOTR. What say you? |
Both are great.
If it's judged by acting: LOTR Effects: LOTR I do, however, think that in the end Star Wars will win out as far as the most revered films. Sometimes technical acheivements aren't everything (though I LOVED the LOTR Trilogy). Star Wars obviously hit a much deeper note in people than simply overawing them with effects. "Jedi" is forever part of pop culture, "Rohirrim" is not. |
The LOTR is the greatest movie(s) ever. I love Star Wars, but there are always qualifications after the first two. The LOTR is just amazing. I can't wait for the ROTK EE to come out this Christmas.
LOTR until they start having conventions of nerds who dress up and act out all the parts of the movie .
LOTR gets my vote. " Im wearing boots of escaping! Im wearing boots of escaping!" |
LOTR
Long time fan of the series. I hoped it would be done well and it was. |
But then Triumph can come and make fun of them. Triumph: OK, time for some Star Wars trivia. What was the substance Han Solo was frozen in in the Empire Strikes Back? Crowd: Corbomite Triumph: Wrong. The correct answer is, "Who gives a shit!" Gotta love Triumph. |
At the risk of outing myself as a nerd...
Solo was frozen in carbonite. Corbomite was the stuff Capt. Kirk claimed the hull of the Enterprise was made of that would "reflect" an attack back at the enemy in "The Corbomite Manuever." |
[1Gunrunner] ...I thought you'd be a little nerdier |
It's like comparing "Dumb and Dumber" to "Gone With The Wind".
Tj |
Harry Potter rules over both of them. I couldn't sit through the first LOTR and will never try again. I was a kid in the 70s and 80s so I've seen the Star Wars movies and they are okay, but nothing I want to see again. People who worship these movies and do the dress up crapp are very strange . They should stay home and play D&D.
Apples and oranges...
Star Wars was a tremendous acheivement in film making for its time. Effects, models and such. LoTR is a tremendous achievement for its time. CGI Gollum, effects, models and such. To compare them literature-wise is where the seperation occurs. LoTR was and is a work of art. Lucas isn't worthy to sharpen Tolkein's pencils. |
I have this distint feeling there are a lot of people who play Dungeons and Dragons on this board.
So I have this question, which one is more realistic D&d or AD&D? |
Put youself back in 1977. When you saw that huge STAR WARS and the first notes of John WIlliams masterpiece in music blared out of the speakers it gave me the hugest goose bumps. And you know what, it still does.
However, I give LOTR the edge for one reason. The writing of Tolkien far surpasses the writing of Lucas, there absolutely is no comparison, and the work that Peter Jackson and the two fat women who worked with him did to bring it all to the screen is beyond compare to anything. The only question I have is, would I be saying this had they both been made at the same time, with equal access to special effects? |
As much as I love Tolkeins work I have to disagree. While Lucas wrote the script to Star Wars the story itself came from Akira Kurosawa and mythical tales from around the world (read some Joseph Campbell). Star Wars is popular for more than its special effects, it's basically a modern retelling of mythology that has been around for millenia. The basic story itself is it's strength. That said I hate comparing the two, LOTR was awesome too. |
LOTR was the "greater" trilogy in terms of overall quality, but Star Wars gets the nod for originality, impact, and lasting effect on society.
I doubt our kids 30 years from now will be posting on ARFCOM about the LOTR toys they never got. |
LOTR was very well made but at least to me I did not leave the movie totally amazed like I did after seeing Star Wars back in 1977. |
If you want originality, Tolkien wrote LOTR from scratch. The original Starwars movie is really a remake of Akira Kurosawa's movie The Hidden Fortress. |
The Silmarillion VS Star Wars Episode 1
No Jar-Jar Binks. The Silmarillion wins by default! |
Woah, I'm not debating Tolkein VS. Lucas as WRITERS, we're talking about movies.
JC, in terms of originality, LOTR has it in spades. However, I as much as I respect the book (I like the movies but the book is vastly superior IMO), Starwars is much more readily identifiable to the general public. Personally I prefer LOTR, but from a mass market perspective, Starwars has had a lot more impact on public awareness. Then again, if the LOTR movies had been made almost 20 years ago and Starwars was only a few years old....

Dude!! IS that the freak from Reno 911?!?!?!?!!? That was soooooooooo funny. He just capped him for running. LOL!!! |

Hobbit is a part of the langage as is jedi.
I read The Lord of the Rings as a child and enjoyed it, seeing it come to life was amazing. |
True to a certain degree but I could pick 20 different lines from Star Wars that most people would recognize instantly, not true for the LOTR trilogy (it does have the whole "My Precious" thing though). Star Wars has had an impact on our culture that LOTR will NEVER have. |
When Wedge sees this, he is going to kick ALL of your asses!
SW CREATED my childhood. SW opened my eyes to creativity and science. SW had REAL Special effects, not the bluescreen, iMac created garbage out there today. LOTR is popular because it reminds people of playing Dungeons and Dragons. |
So did disco - that doesn't make it BETTER than classical music. LOTR all the way, even though I am a huge star wars fan, and have very fond memories of it. |
RUNEQUEST!!!! Actually, I preferred AD&D over D&D because that's the first system I played. I haven't cared too much for any subsequent editions. |
Books - LOTR
Films - SW Based upon what they both did to their respective genre at the time of release. |
No, it's popular because it's an incredibly well done series of movies and it's based on one of the most-loved book series ever written. |
Which is better, Star Trek: original series, animated or next generation?
I did lose all my respect for Star Wars when they came out with Ewoks and Jar Jar Binks |
Who remembers Chivalry and Sorcery, by Fantasy Games Unlimited? Magic and monster system strongly influenced by LOTR, with combat system that required a seperate college course to understand.
As to the main thread, we need to wait twenty years or so to really find out. LOTR used to be an english assignment in hs and college. It's been done before as an animated, though forgettable show. Time will tell. |
LOTR because........No damn Ewoks in Lothlorien!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Star Wars easily.
While both are great technical achievements Star Wars is by far the most historically important. Despite the foundation of the books I am afraid as time passes the LOTR movies are going to take on a the same type feeling the movie “Titanic” now inspires a great technical achievement with little heart and little under the surface. The movies will be view as a pale imitation of the books. |
+1 While the LOTR trilogy was great (ROTK was absolutely breathtaking), Star Wars was one of the most, if not THE most, significant movie since color and sound...all of the special effects in Star Wars had never been done before...it was a truly groundbreaking achievement, and changed the course of moviemaking forever...Star Wars all the way. BTW, while I'm on the subject of Star Wars...it is NOT science fiction (I get tired of people trying to compare it to Star Trek, which IS science fiction)...Star Wars is epic fantasy in a space setting...read some Joseph Campbell and you'll understand... |
This thread is DYING for a poll to be added at the front.
IMHO, LOTR is so much better than SW, there really is no comparison. SW was great in its day. It was the best they could do at the time. It was revolutionary in its time. In the end, it is a simple story of good versus evil, black versus white. LOTR has an entire set of books to back it up, artwork, "HOME", "Letters", "Hobbit", "Silmarillion",... Oh yeah, I almost forgot, LOTR was also made into a movie recently. It was pretty good, too, I hear. |
Lord of the Rings is far far far superior in my opinion. Star Wars is WAY over rated these days. It was good in its day, but lets face the facts about it. I do however like many of the games based in the Star Wars universe, like Jedi Knight II, TIE Fighter, X-Wing Alliance, and Knights of the Old Republic. Hell Knights of the Old Republic had MORE Star Warsishness in it than the last two movies combined! Oddly, I haven't played a single Lord of the Rings game.
Orcs/Uroc Hai vs. Ewoks would be good movie! |
That basically explains one of the main reasons for it's longevity. |
As good as LOTR was, it was slightly overwrought and overdone. It was TOO LONG.
Fidelity to the books is one thing, but I was ready to poke out my eyeball by the third hour or Return of the King. It should have been shorter in theatrical release. The story told just did not require that much screen time. Star Wars, ANH and ESB at least, were so groundbreaking and simply HUGE (Waaaay bigger as a moviegoing phenomenom) that NOTHING will ever compare (until maybe true virtual reality has its landmark effort). Star Wars ANH is a GREAT story in it own right, no matter where its roots lie. Brilliantly told and the effects etc. were merely there to enhance the story, they were not THE story. I sometimes got the feeling in LOTR that the effects were too much. People who didn't live it don't remember just how unique and groundbreaking Star Wars truly was. But, Star Wars is every bit as good at telling an epic story of good v. evil, and every man's struggle with it, as LOTR. |
I have my favorite - but I REALLY like SW too! I remember seeing "Star Wars" in the drive-in when I was a kid - and I loved it. I didn't make a poll because I really like to read what my friends here THINK - not look at numbers!
Thanks to those who took the time to post! Eric E |

Highly unlikely. |
No but in the LOTR movies you get: Gimli the cliché spewing clown dwarf … And Merry and Pippin the idiot clown hobbits… far worse that an Ewoks. |
