Hastings: Reinstate the assault weapons ban

By DARRAN SIMON AND SOFIA SANTANA

[email protected]

U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar, introduced legislation Wednesday to reinstate the assault weapons ban, according to his office.

The ban -- the centerpiece of the 1994 Crime Bill -- expired Monday. It applied to 19 semiautomatic weapons, banned certain features on firearms such as bayonet mounts, and limited ammunition magazines to 10 rounds. It was signed into law by former President Bill Clinton.

A clause in the ban said it would expire unless Congress specifically reauthorized it. President Bush opted not to lobby the GOP-controlled Congress and the deadline passed Monday with no vote.

Expiration of the act ''favors gangs, terrorists, drug dealers'' and endangers others, Hastings said in a statement.

Also Wednesday, several Miami-Dade leaders spoke against the use of assault weapons. Their plea comes after Miami-Dade Officer Keenya Hubert was shot with an AK-47 on Sunday. Hubert sustained injuries to her shoulder and forehead.

According to the Violence Policy Center in Washington, D.C., one in five police officers slain in the line of duty are killed by assault weapons.

I thought Alcee Hastings was in prison.  Did they let him out?

So?  A congressional rep can introduce any bill they like, and some of them are truly stupid.  But this bill and any other like it has exactly no chance at passage at least until next year (depending on the election results).

VPC lists 41 officer deaths reputedly by "assault weapons".  4 were by M-1 Carbine (not listed as AW), 2 by Mini-14 (again, not listed as AW) and 8 by SKS (not verified to be in configuration as AW).  That's 14 of 41, thereby reducing the actual number to 27 out of 211 or 1 out of 8.  Does it matter to them?  Doubtful!

The obvious question is HOW and why were 184 police killed with 'UNBANNED" guns, including likely their own?  That would be an ASTOUNDING 87+%  of all incidents.  The world wants to know how this can happen.

No doubt every year from now on, one or more members of Congress will introduce an AWB.

Reality of life.

Nothing to see here.

I take it this means yes.  I associate the name with "crook" but can't remember any details.

You mean like they did from 1989 until 1994, when they finally got one passed?

They pull it out of their asses, when they occasionally remove their heads to breathe.
