I would also say Ar15, its cheaper to shoot (i think a little more user friendly) mags are alot cheaper.
Nothing wrong with the M1a the new socom looks badass. |

A good M1A is worth the money, but an AR costs less than the M1A.

M1's are fine, but AR's are better. AR's are lighter, less expensive to buy, less expensive to shoot and totally self customizable. You're a troll becuase this is AR15.com. Where's your loyalty?

If you only lived in UT... Ok, I think I should not have asked... But it has been helpful. I think I'll go with the AR15... Now the question is, should I build my own like a friend did and save money or not? AKs? That is also something I've been thinking about...

M1A first...buy an AR15 receiver with the money left over (you need to have money left over lol), and then build your AR15 as you wish later...

I have both and would suggest the AR while you continue to look for a good used M1A - the older ones were built with more USGI parts and tend to be better weapons.

It really all depends on why you want a new rifle. If it is purely for collectable interest then it does not matter which you buy. (let personal taste dictate your purchase) On the other hand, if you have a use in mind for this new rifle, then imagine yourself in the situation you may be using it for. If it is a survival situation, imagine yourself in that situation. Will you be hiking around with this rifle? Will you need to shoot through bush? (will you need a round that will plow through bushes?) Will you need to shoot through cars or other objects if need be? Will weight be a major factor? Will bullet penitration be a factor? Will you want a rifle that will do double duty? (one you can hunt big game with as well?) Would you want a rilfe that can deliver a good buttstroke? Will you want a smaller rifle that you can get in and out of a vehicle with? Once you've answered these questions you will know what you need. What are you gonna use the rifle for???
If you DIY, you can get into a decent AR for $600. You can not get into a decent M1A for less than $1,400. And DO NOT buy a Springfield Armory M1A. The ONLY way to go is with true USGI parts. Springfields stuff is all crap and I've heard of several flying apart on the FIRST mag. eta - If you want a battle rifle .308, get an FAL The only "use" for an M1A is highpower competition IMO. Now, "they look cool" is a compeltely valid reason to get one as well. |

Admit it, the rifle will never be anywhere but your house or the range. An AR is cheaper and easier to shoot well. Get both, but an AR 1st. |

I Had The Same Problem I had to Have a Ar15,AR10,M1A,FN FAL, So i gOT THEM ALL.Why Noy Start Out With A Armalite AR10 in 308win But a Ar15 Is A good Rifle To Start Out with.

I agree with the above posts on getting both...Start with the AR and then the M1A, thats what I did...I'm up to 4 AR's, 1 National Match M1A, and 1 Garand...FYI, not all Springfields are junk, mine have worked perfectly...Check out Battlerifles.com for M1 info...

First of all thanks for all of the good input. I think I am heading in the right direction now. I have enough $$$ in pocket to get M1A new... What I am looking for is a true AW the one that Fineswine doesn't want me to have. I want something I can compete with and also go out to the desert and pop some jack rabbits and other moving things if need be. Out here in UT I never go to the range for fun, only for CMP comps... The desert and mountains are my range. So it will get A LOT of use. I want a shooter, not something that I am afraid of putting bullets through because of its collectors value. I have been sticking with WWII stuff, but now I think it is time to get something more modern to add to the collection.
I have been leaning towards an M1A because it is American, I think it looks cool and because of the greater thrust per squeeze. Also my M1 wants some company. But I have come to the conclusion that I first need an AR15, AK or SKS. Now if I go AR15 then do I want to make my own from kits and save money or not make my own? And what are the best companies to go with? I hear Bushmaster and Rockriver are good. I am thinking of a 50 but that will be a few years.... I hope before they get a national ban. |

How about a DSA FAL, its made in the USA, and its on the list of Feinstein's evil guns? I don't know for sure, just here on the ARFCOM, I've hearing reports that Springfield is having QA problems with their rifles since they've run out of USGI parts. I have a SA NM M1A, and I've never had any problems. Mags are going to be expensive side if you want true USGI ones. I undertand that Sportman's Guide is selling some Tawian made mags using USGI machinary that are reasonably price and fucntion okay. FAL mag are dirt cheap. Personally, for me I like the adjustable gas valve for tailoring the rifle specifically to ammo for a minime of wear and tear on your rifle, ie you use just enough gas to make the action work. |

I would suggest the AR. As an owner of both, the AR has far more capacity for customization. As the only change to the M1A was the filed off bayonette lug, I think the AR would be more of an "in your face" statement. From the tone of your post, you appear to want to make such a statement.

Simple, AR-10. It's an AR15 that shoots 7.62 like the M1A. Actually, the historical reality is the reverse: the AR15 is a derivative of the AR10. I had (note the past tense) an M1A. Bought an AR-10. Sold the M1A.
