I left work for lunch and went to the grocery store. On the way there, I turned left through a traffic light. I was in one of two left turn lanes. We turned onto a road with three lanes I went from the turn lane on the right to the center lane. A few hundred feet after the turn is made, we lose the right lane.
One of the guys who was in front of me in the turn lane was in the right lane after the turn. I could tell by the way he was driving that he was looking for a certain driveway. I backed off a couple car lengths but maintained a nice pace close to the speed limit. I found out in a few moments that the driveway he wanted was right where we lost the right lane. I smoothly applied brakes to maintain distance.
So far so good, right?
The guy ahead of me had just cleared the lane leaving nobody ahead of me, when the White Bronco almost right next to me - no turn signal, no brake lights - jumps right in front of me and slams on his brakes, coming almost to a stop in front of me sitting diagonal in the lane.
A nice easy common traffic situation has just become a wreck in the making. Shit.
I already had the brake covered, so I simply locked up my front tires.
I don't know what most people think when they are about to hit somebody and it is appearing that their best efforts aren't looking to be enough to stop the collision. I get annoyed. If there isn't enough time to angrily ask out loud why in the HELL the guy in front of me who has nobody ahead of him isn't shoving down his gas pedal to get his beast moving, I think it, and hope that the guy in front of me will pop his head out of his rear cavity quickly enough to act soon enough to avoid being hit. I understand that most people get scared. I don't.
The White Bronco took notice of my suddenly squealing tires, and SLOWLY started moving back to his own lane. I didn't think I was going to get my own beast shut down in time to avoid bradsiding him, but somehow it happened just that way. As soon as he gave me sufficient room, I did a mirror check to make sure nobody was fixing to hit me. I then looked quickly to the road that WAS in front of the Bronco when he cut in front of me, and there was a dark colored SUV turning left into the shopping center, with NO turn signal. I watched him long enough to verify that it wasn't blinking. There also was not a left turn lane where he was turning left.
WTF? There were plenty of ways to get into that shopping center without stopping in the lane of traffic and waiting for the oncoming traffic to clear. Then some moron who hasn't been told he shouldn't get high and drive, comes along, nearly rams him, then nearly rams me.
I can understand emergency maneuvers to avoid hitting somebody, but you COMPLETE the maneuver by accelerating after you change lanes or swerve.
BTW - this isn't the first time somebody has stopped halfway through such a maneuver, right in front of me.
Apparently there are a great many people who slept through drivers training and defensive driving, and certainly do not engage their brains when driving.
