[ARCHIVED THREAD] - Help with an old rifle

I guy here at work has an old WW2 rifle that has been passed down in his family. States was used in WW2. ("no pics sorry) ONly thing he can tell me is its an M20 Semi-Auto Carbine, 16 round mag that is bottom loaded. I cant locate anything on this. Any ideas? (Yes, I know, need pics)

There was an M-1 carbine and a select fire version called the M-2.

What is stamped on the receiver?

What caliber? size? where does the mag go (directly in front of trigger like M1 Carbine or further out like a reising sub gun)?

As far as whats stamped on reciver im not sure. He doesnt ahve it with him right now (moved recently).
As for mag, he isnt sure. Been ahwile since he has used it.

I wish I had more info cause this is bugging me.

only reference I found for an M20 is a recoiless rifle (ie bazooka)

There's really only one rifle it could be. WWII era + 15 round capacity mag = M1 Carbine

if it says M2 it could have been converted and both would be right
M1 carbine WWII rifle converted to
M2 didn't show up till Korea

He said it is like the top one, but forward past the mag is all metal with by what he is saying a full heat shield.

That is an M2 or a later conversion/production.
If it is an original M2 make sure it is not select fire, NFA firearm
the metal heat shield gives it away.
fun rifle to shoot though

Its not select fire, its semi-auto.

Some of the Iver Johnson and others had the heat sheild replaced with the metal one instead of the wooden one. Sounds like he's got an M1-Carbine to me. If there's a little lever on the right side of the reciever then it may be an M2 but I doubt it.
