So if you had the choice which would you prefer.
A long, comfortable, content but mostly uneventful life of approx. 100 years that nobody would remember... OR A dramatic life of great personal achievement that would only last approx. 50 years but would be remembered for centuries. Longevity in life or rememberence? |
IBTP!
ETA: Now that the poll is in, I don't give a rip what anybody except my family thinks of me after I'm dead. I do care about my life while I'm living it, though. Easy decision. |
Short, I dont care to get that old anyway, hell Im 22 and already bored with stuff to do.
Can I take 25 and do something even bigger then the 50 year choice. |
Who the hell cares if anybody remembers me? It certainly wouldn't matter to me seeing as though I'd be dead!
Very few people will ever be rembered for 100 years no matter what they do and I really dont want to live a hundred years. Too much work.
I didnt vote. |
I give a rat's ass what people think about me. As long as I know I've contributed to humanity - who gives a fuck?
Live long and prosper, speculators. |
Long life...no question
hopefully the people in New Orleans will have long life....and Mobile etc..that storm is a bad one |
+1 but its not working for me. I keep surviving. |
A few centuries is a mere instant, on a cosmic timescale.
10,000 years from now, the question of whether or not you were remembered 200 years after your death isn't likely to come up... |
The folks I wanna be remembered by will be gone with-in a few decades of MY exit. It's what THEY remember that counts IMHO.
While I want to live as long as possible I refuse to be one of those half-awake people who are content just to be alive. I've been to plenty of parties & I have not once been the quiet guy in the corner.
Some might love me & some might think I'm an idiot but people know who I am. Instead of just living out your years you should USE your life. You only get one so get something out of it. |
Nothing great happens after 50. You sit around watching Mattlock waiting to die.
Die young and leave a good looking corpse. |
Just because you are not remembered for centuries doesn't mean you didn't have a great time and enjoyed every minute of your life.
I say being remembered by a bunch of nobodies is overrated. What do I care about that when I'm dead? I prefer lots of sex, lots of booze, and then some more sex. Okay, okay.... once I started a family, all that other stuff became nonsense. Really. I'd like to pass on knowledge and wealth to my heirs. Give them a 'step up' so to speak. |
Why bother being remembered? It's not like you can enjoy it after you're dead.
I think that sometimes, I dont want the last years of my life to be spent hanging out at the local Hardees drinking coffee. |
I think the point is having 'contributed' something to humanity. I don't think Aristotle, Gallileo, Newton and Einstein were concerned with personal fame. I'm sure they would love to know they would be remembered and that they made their mark, but I think the achievement, discovery or great contribution is the goal of great men. I can only imagine the satisfaction of actually having made the world a better place with a contribution to the advancement of humanity. |

Classic ARFCOM answer... +1 |
Why would I care if people remember me? I don't have that kind of ego.
While they all contributed greatly... they all lived long lives. Aristotle... died at age 62. Galileo.... died at age 77. Newton... died at age 84. Einstein... died at age 76. I say live a long time and do great things. |
Live long and come back as king of the zombies, then you can have both.
+1!! |
Whats the point of being the zombie king? All your followers just walk around all day like special ed students and zombie girls are busted looking. |
Its like being a Dem party offical, your followers are mindless like you, but your higher up so later you you can hug yourself and feel special. |
Short & memorable...
I have no desire to linger on, but then again I have no plans for a family so once I get too old to do stuff, life will really suck... |
Why would you think it is about ego? |
[Kurgan]I have something to say: it's better burn out, than to fade away.[/Kurgan]
Yes but the question was IF you could only have one. |
Then as before... Live a long time and be there for your family. |

Nobody cares for most of the people that made a dent in history. Most causes are forgotten or belitteled. Many things that were great achievements once are misunderstood and inconsequential today. For every person that regards your legacy as something positive there are 10 guys who'd rather piss on your grave. JMHO
Die young for what or whom...?! Do the right thing and do the thing right. If that means they nail the 6th board shut on top of you earlier then so be it. Got to be able to look in the mirror every morning. If you can do that then you did alright. Leave the legacy up to the historians - their opinion matters even less then yours or mine does and it changes over time on top of that. The 2nd amendment is a good example. Do you think that after a bloody revolution and finally selfrule the founding fathers were concerned with duckhunting...???? I don't think so either..... "nuff said! LRdrvr |
I choose: A long life that nobody remembers
Remember: "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming--"WOW--What a Ride!" |
What else would wanting to be remembered forever be about? |
Remembered for great personal achievement not ego. As I said before... |
Exactly. Ego. I thought you would go this route, but there are many who made great contributions and drifted into obscurity. Living a short life of great contribution vs. a long life without contribution is a different question. Can I have a long life of consumption and excess? |
my biggest fear other than the gov confiscating my weapons is getting so old the i can't piss on my own. someone please put me out of myu misery f it come to either of those.
Do you mean to say that great personal achievement is that achievement which is sanctioned 'great', or that achievement which is sanctioned 'personal'? First you need to decide if there is a such thing as altruistic. After that... it doesn't matter which side of the fence you sit on... it's all truth. BTW... to answer the question that we all are asking.... YES. oh.. and NO. So many nonobots... so few strings. |

I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.
Jack London I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. Jack London The proper function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days in trying to prolong them. I shall use my time. Jack London You can't wait for inspiration. You have to go after it with a club. Jack London I shall not die of a cold. I shall die of having lived. Willa Cather As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so life well used brings happy death. Leonardo DaVinci Some people are so afraid do die that they never begin to live. Henry Van Dyke He who doesn't fear death dies only once. Giovanni Falcone Die, v.: To stop sinning suddenly. Elbert Hubbard If a man hasn't discovered something that he will die for, he isn't fit to live. Martin Luther King, Jr. The idea is to die young as late as possible. Ashley Montagu What we have done for ourselves alone dies with us; what we have done for others and the world remains and is immortal. Albert Pike |
The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.
Mark Twain All say, "How hard it is that we have to die" - a strange complaint to come from the mouths of people who have had to live. Mark Twain |
It doesn't matter to me at all.......
edit: If I ever have a wife/kids, I want to live long enough to support my wife, see the kids off to a sound start in life, etc. Otherwise, I'm in no hurry to stay or leave, either way. |
50 well lived years are worth more to me than 100 years of boredom.
I voted 50 after doing great things. Hey, we're all going to die. That part is a given. I'd rather know I accomplished alot and made a difference as I passed rather than just took up space.
