He might have some substance.  The gun might be really rusted, so when it is shot it blows up, thereby earning the trap title.

It's a variation of a "whippet" gun. Often carried slung from the shoulder under a coat, if the SHTF, you would "whip it" out to save your butt.  

Is the barrel at least 18 inches long? Is the overall length greater than 26(I think) inches? (Has to be BOTH)

If it meets those dimensions, it's not illegal, but  might be stolen. The cops would probably appreciate some clue as to where it came from. Be a good citizen and call them.

Or, if the barrels too short/or you don't want involved with the cops. Take off the barrel and sell what's left to a gunsmith  or buy new parts and rebuild to legal configuration.

Just some ideas, you do as you feel right.
