Now that I think about it, I haven't heard of any kittens being stomped lately. Did the JBT team retire or something? Or are they still out there somewhere charging people with making illegal suppressors from fender washers and muffler pipe?

I'm reminded of this because I happened to catch America's Most Wanted the other night, and I was surprised when they ran a story of a ATF running a sting operation against (gasp) actual criminals! (Hell's Angels)

If it has actually gotten better, when did this happen?

They must all be laying low in fear of the Uzis and AK-47s being sold by the ice cream man.  I haven't heard of any gassing and roasting of American citizens lately.

While I would admit that there are criminals involved in biker gangs...and most likely many of them are criminals, we might not want get too excited about the implementation of Rico Laws. Those can be used in ways that I would hope many gun owners would think go against their freedoms...

Maybe under Ashcroft's Dept o' Justice the institutional culture isn't one of persecution for paperwork violations?

At least I'm hoping that's the case.

I have noticed too.  Probably, since they have been taken under the FBI umbrella, and are now out from under the influence of the IRS, perhaps they might actually have some direction, and are now being put to some actual real law enforcement use.  There are plenty of Middle Easterners to investigate, etc.

Honestly, I've gotta give the ATF  a thumbs up for releasing those clarification letters right away that says LE marked stuff is OK to buy/sell.   Yeah, we all knew this here, but how many dealers would have balked at selling otherwise?   The ATF often seems to leave stuff like this in limbo, especially when it goes in our favor, but this time, for whatever reason, they didn't.

Far as I know, RICO wasn't involved. I believe the investigations was related to a huge fight and shootout in a casino. I would expect charges for making and importing illegal machineguns. Not that I agree with the law, but at least they're using it against people who actually make illegal machineguns and use them to commit crimes, instead of law-abiding civilians who had the wrong spare parts lying around.

Hope so too. Just another reason to vote for Bush.
