I don't know about your experiences, but AM radio reception for me sucks, but if I want to hear Glenn Beck or Rush that is where they are.

Why is there still AM radio? What stops it from going away like the 8-track?

Any engineering/communication brainiacs out there?

Because some people still listen to it.

AM is the only place for talk radio that isn't Howard Stern!

I believe its a cheaper choice for the station and you can also get your signal out further (I think)

AM exists because of talk radio. Prior to talk, AM radio was dying.

It has much superior range, plus, us pilots can use the transmission towers as nav aids....Plus, I likes listening to Rush on the ADF when I fly

Definately farther signal with lower wattage output = cheaper to operate.

Here in Cincinnati, the Big One 700 WLW is one of the largest audience draws in the midwest.

Easier to modulate, i.e. cheaper. Also much much much greater range than the FM stations.

Profit motive. The investment in equipment is already made, the stations make money and so continue to operate.

I would imagine that the transmission equipment used in an AM station today is not hte same equipment that was in use even twenty years ago, and FM has been out for nearly forty years, and has been the more accepted format for most listeners for thirty years. AM has a much longer range, and for those who live outside of a large city Am is often the only option, also FM works via Line Of Site, meaning that hills and valleys have more effect on the signal than AM, which is reflected off the troposphere.

Because talkradio doesn't require the fidelity of FM...

FM is for music, AM for voice...

Sure beats those lame-ass 'morning shows' on the 'music' stations...

Clue: If you are a 'rock' station, then I don't want to hear a human voice for more than 1-2 minutes, unless it's in a song or (by necessity) a commercial....

As far as talk radio is concerned, I don't listen to it. I'm already in the choir. I don't need to be preached to.
