Just heard on CNN that Sen. Kerry is proposing a new "anti-crime" bill which will include a new AWB. Anyone know anything about this?????

What a STUPID announcement for him to make.
I'm listening to the T.V. while I sit here and as they just mentioned on MSNBC the people who support a ban DON'T get out and vote over it but the people (US) who'r against a ban DO. That guy is a freakin' "genius". Here John, take an issue that's died and make sure your opponents base turns out at the polls with it while picking up squat from YOUR base

Wow, what a flip-flop! Last week he was on tv with a shotgun and was trying to appeal to gun owners. I think he is trying to throw the election on purpose now.

Funny thing, that shotgun he got last week was a semi-auto... If I remember correctly, Kerry was one of four cosponsers on a bill to ban ALL semi-auto shotguns and ALL rifles which accept detachable magazines... Does anyone happen to have the bill #?

Nope. Can't do it. Bush 41 could ban certain imports by Executive Order because the Gun Control Act of 1968 banned importation of non-sporting firearms, and left it to the Secretary of the Treasury to decide what constitutes "sporting." Bush, as the Secretary of the Treasury's boss, merely told him how to interpret Sporting. But without the authority of the GCA1968, he wouldn't have been able to do it. Kerry couldn't ban a domestic AR or AK by executive order because there's no preexisting law that gives the President the authority to do it. |

Not all semi-autos--just those with a pistol grip. And pistol grip was defined very loosely. Kerry co-sponsored S. 1431, the "Assault Weapons Ban and Law Enforcement Protection Act of 2003," which would have made it illegal to own, among other things, a "semiautomatic shotgun that has a pistol grip." The bill defined "pistol grip" as "a grip, a thumbhole stock, or any other characteristic that can function as a grip." |
