ASSAULT WEAPONS BAN
Celebrate expiration

Recent wire service coverage of the impending expiration of the 1994 assault weapons ban has committed the journalistic sin of misleading by silence.

Although the articles have quoted people on both sides of the issue, they have failed to address the substance -- or more accurately, the lack of substance -- of the ban itself.

Under the current ban, assault weapons are defined solely on the basis of characteristics that in no way affect the function of the weapon.

Under the law, an AR-15 with a bayonet lug or a flash hider is an assault weapon," but an otherwise identical rifle without those features is not.

Both fire the same ammunition, have the same range and fire one shot for each pull of the trigger. Weapons functionally identical to those presently banned, but lacking those cosmetic additions, have been readily available throughout the period of the ban.

It isn't AK-47s and Uzis that will flood the streets; it's bayonet lugs and folding stocks.

The assault weapons ban should be recognized for what it was: a meaningless act of liberal incrementalism intended to chip away at the edges of constitu- tional liberty.

Its expiration should be celebrated, as it means one more leftist plot against freedom has found its way to the ash heap of history.

AWSOME, I'm glad someone in the media finally gets it; even if it is a small newspaper.

Wow! That made it into print?

If it weren't for all the duplicate "IT"S DEAD - YIPPE I POSTED!!!!!" threads, this might have received more notice.

We slam the press for their anti bias so much, it would be nice to congratulate them on their sanity for a change.

To clarify, it's actually a letter to the editor.
