So, my brother always wanted a PDW type pistol, stockless of course, with the broomhandle fwd grip. Are weapons like that gonna be back on the table? Am I correct that pistols can be imported with the evil features but hi cap capable rifles cannot?

Speshul Wepenz made some SP89 clones, sans shroud. ORF could probably do one up for you, definitely could if you supplied the parts kit.

I bet Ohio Rapid Fire or Jayson at IGF can build an SP89 for you.

Pistols are covered by a 1993 import ban but you can import the parts and assemble one yourself.

+1 for ORF to build one.. the forward grip would make it a NFA weapon tho.. (AOW)

You could also do a SP-89 Stretch.. www.fjvollmer.com/ROB-1/4/4.htm

Just remember that if you add a front grip you will not have a pistol but an AOW wich requires a tax stamp.

Correct me if I'm wrong:

They can't be imported (been covered before)
But magazines can be located outside of the pistol grip.

Someone like Vector could always make a knock-off.

You're wrong

The mag location thing is aprt of the stupidass, dead AWB...

The only rule is no forward grips without registration as an AOW...

The HK one is banned under the 89 import ban...

A clone would be legit, though...

Also, an AR pistol of similar proportions would be legal now...

Olympic Arms makes the appropriate sized uppers...

Okay, what I thought. Thanks for clearing it up.

Someone should get a "ruling" from the ATF on the matter of adding a forward pistol grip to a pistol not originally designed with it.  In a court case in NC I think it was the District Court ruled adding one was not manufacturing an AOW, and threw out charges against someone regarding that (www.titleii.com/BardwellOLD/us_v_davis2.txt  specifically 24-27 and then elsewhere it throws out the charges).

Wonder if the ATF might reverse some of it's earlier policy, doubtful but...

Forward grip parallel to the barrel are allowed. No forward grips at an angle to the barrel.

The SP89 was actually banned by name in a Clinton executive order in 1993.  It would take another executive order or a supreme court ruling to unban it.

www.hkpro.com/sp89.htm

Best thing you can hope for is for ORF to build you a clone with enough US parts not to be an imported gun, and not to call it an SP89.  How 'bout an ORF89 anyone?

Actually, the 9mm out of a short barrel has better ballistic characteristics that a .223.  I'm hoping to add an SP-89 clone to my collection.  Stay away from the SW89s though--they were built very light to get around the 50oz. rule that no longer exists as of today.  I can't imagine the parts in those will last very long.

Then again, Vector will probably have a mini-Uzi transferable as a handgun (with no stock).  Might be better...
