Always liked the looks of the F-111 as well

F-4... proof if you have big enough engines, you can make ANYTHING fly.

That bird is so sexy.

My father has over 2500 hours in the Phantom. He said it was quite nice. It handled decent when it was under mach one. However, when he transitioned to the hornet, it was a different story. The hornet is a night and day difference. I know he did miss the awesome power of the phantom tho...

Nice thud pics. Man those pilots had a crappy survival % in nam. Something about flying straight into hell with one engine

What about the RB-66....
They had to lead the way in for the strike as a pathfinder / ECM / EW jammer with no armor, armament or afterburners....

yea, that sucks. I was talking more of a fighter/bomber role, but there is always some poor sap that has to sit and take the shit, with no protection....

Douglas A3D Skywarrior, later named A-3 for the Navy.
Whale was just its nickname.
The B-66 Destroyer was developed from it for the Air Force, but it has almost
no interchangeable parts.
The B-66 was also very underpowered because the engines originally
for it were commandeered for SAC's B-52s by Gen LeMay so they used weaker
Allison J71 turbojets instead of the J57s originally intended.
The Destroyer's take off roll was so long it was in danger of overrunning the end
of the runway.
Now imagine flying into North Vietnam in one.

Flying? Shit, if the takeoff is that bad... Vietnam... hot, humid air... laden with a bunch of stuff... oh yeah, the takeoff alone would be interesting.

At least it had ejection seats....
(Not so for the A-3)
