U.S. Draft Dodgers Getting Recognized

September 10, 2004 08:11 AM EDT

NELSON, British Columbia - U.S. draft dodgers who fled to Canada are finally getting some recognition - in Canada.

Artists and activists in this picturesque lakeside town have announced plans for a bronze monument and festival to honor them.

"This will mark the courageous legacy of Vietnam War resisters and the Canadians who helped them resettle in this country during that tumultuous era," said Isaac Romano, director of Our Way Home, a celebration set for 2006.

Dennis Klein, a sculptor and teacher at Kootenay School of the Arts, and artist Naomi Lewis have been chosen to make a memorial depicting Canadians embracing the hands of American resisters.

"I've met so many draft resisters over the years and some of them are local peers of mine that are artists and others are a part of the community," Klein said. "It would be nice to honor them and all those that actually took a step toward peace."

BULLSHIT!!!!!!

You dont "resist" something by running away from it!

If you had the balls you would have stayed, fought and changed the system.  All your running away proved was that you were A FUCKING COWARD.  Your actions GUARANTEED that another man would have to step up and take your place.

Doesn't surpirze me ONE bit.

[Rant mode = On] Haven't you noticed the times we live in? Good = Bad. Black = White. Traitorous activities = Patriotism, honor and courage. This world has gone insane. So I have to laugh when so many (even HERE) start beating the drum about "the world would be SO much better off without all of them crazy Christians". (Yeah, like it's the crazy Christians who are  protesting everything and who live without direction or honor.) You know, those people who are considered to be "Ma and Pa America"? The ones who keep this country running day to day and who've lost children in the war in Iraq and still act with honor and believe that America is good and have hope for the future? I would say that a majority of those peole are religious and believe in something higher than themselves. And then there's the godless people who do things like this and call it 'honorable'. [Rant mode = Off]

This, like so many other things (actors, comedians, news anchors), is what makes Canada one of the finest countries in the world.  We are honored to have them as our ally.

That's one memorial that does deserve to be defaced with grafitti.

What a load of crap that is.  I'd like to go there just so I could point and laugh.

I'm confused here.  Since when is cowardice a trait we seek to exalt?  What kind of statue would they erect?  A scared little girlie man bent over, his hands covering his face and peeking through his fingers?

Maybe it'd be this:

They'd have to inscribe it in French.

+1

You might be able to pursuade me that the Draft Dodgers who stayed here and burned their draft cards were couragous because they took on Uncle Sam and risked going to prison. But the people who fled to Canada were cowards. Pure and simple! They were afraid to fight in the war, and they were afraid to fight for change!

Maybe some Chechen contracter will build a bomb into it and blow it and them sky high when they open it up.

FYI, the last Chechen president was killed by a bomb that had been built into the Staduim VIP section.

When I saw the topic title, I immediately thought it would be a Memorial to carve in stone the lying statements of public Figures who falsely claim or exaggerate their military service, a la the ancient olympic statues memorializing and embarassing cheaters. Thought it would be a GREAT idea. A 'Stolen Valor' Wall.
People like Max Cleland who bobbled his own grenade while on a beer run and let people believe he was mid-combat when it happened.
People like Senator Harkin, who recently called Cheney a "coward" - Harkin that told everyone for decades he was a combat pilot, serving in Vietnam, whose Truth is that he was a ferry pilot, based in Japan, shuttling aircraft for depot-level repairs, and isn't even entitled to the Vietnam Service Ribbon.
People like John F'in Kerry, with his false Purple Hearts, his Silver Star with bogus 'V' for Valor.

To read the topic is actually about liberals / socialists / pacifists honoring cowards is no surprise. It's a damned shame our military doesn't care to retrieve disserters. We know where these assclowns are. They are getting treated like celebrities, conducting interviews - send a small squad of Leavenworth MPs up there AND GRAB THEM.

And some day in my dotage, I'll have to take my RV on a northern tier tour, and yank down these statues. This one honoring the disserters, and  the statue of Lenin proudly displayed in the Fremont district of Seattle

Fuck them.  It's Canada and they can do anything that tickles their liberal fancies.

Just don't try to export that crap down here.  If you do...it won't make it back to The Great White North in one piece.

The most pathetic draft dodger I know is my brother, who dodged that draft back in Denmark in the 1980s.

WTF ???   Denmark wasn't at war, we weren't sending troops overseas (like we are now in Iraq and A'Stan) - it was just a matter of giving 1 year back to a country that provided one of the most securea and comfortable societies in the freaking world for him!!   No war, no danger, no political controversy - just serving your damn country for a change!

What a douchebag - I can't stand that guy!!

yeah ... but it's not like I dwell on it or anything
