MAYBE WE are imagining things. Maybe the slaughters at Columbine High school, on the Stockton schoolyard, inside the high-rise offices at 101 California St. in San Francisco and all of those other high-powered gun massacres never happened. Otherwise, it's hard to explain how President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress can let the ban on assault weapons simply dissolve -- or how the rest of us can just sit idly by.

The Federal Assault Weapons Ban, the landmark gun-control law of 1994, expires Monday unless lawmakers miraculously rally to extend it.

Homeland security begins at home


The federal assault-weapons ban will expire Monday. Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., deserves great credit for successfully leading the charge to pass and renew the ban. But President Bush refuses to restore it. Just days from now, gun companies will be free once again to manufacture these weapons of war for civilian use, and we will all pay the price.

Tragically, ours is a city that knows gun violence all too well. Mayor George Moscone and Supervisor Harvey Milk were gunned down in San Francisco City Hall in 1978. On a hot summer day in 1993, Gian Luigi Ferri walked into 101 California St. armed with two high-capacity assault weapons. He murdered eight people and wounded six others. Just last April, in another tragic loss for our city, San Francisco Police Officer Isaac Espinoza was killed with an assault weapon. In total, there have been 66 homicides in San Francisco this year; 48 of those people were killed with guns.

Curb's end splits cops, gun buffs


It's almost certain that a federal ban of 19 kinds of semiautomatic firearms will end after Monday.

What's not certain is the effect it will have on the nation once these firearms - such as Uzis and AK-47 rifles - are again legal to purchase.

Police officers who support an extension of the ban say the streets will become more dangerous, with criminals having easier access to high-powered firearms.

Not true, say some gun enthusiasts, who called the 10-year-old ban a "feel good" piece of legislation. A leader of the National Rifle Association says the law did nothing to lower the nation's crime rate.

Poll: Texans split on gun control

September 10, 2004 — Eighty percent of Texans — including 78 percent with guns in their homes — want Congress to renew the assault weapons ban that is set to expire Monday, according to the Scripps Howard Texas Poll.

Fifteen percent of Texans oppose renewing the ban.

“Americans will die if the assault ban sunsets," said Eric Howard, spokesman for the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a gun control advocacy group.

Texans support the ban because they don’t understand the weapons being restricted, said Kelly Hobbs, a spokeswoman for the National Rifle Association, which opposes extending the ban.

Murder guns To be legal Monday

REPUBLICAN leaders of Congress acted this week to ensure that rapid-fire, mass-killing weapons will begin flooding America’s streets Monday.

They refused to let either the Senate or House vote on extending America’s decade-old ban on 19 types of military-style assault weapons with big magazines. Their decision means the ban will expire Monday, and stores will resume selling the guns designed to mow down large numbers of people.

Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn., and House Majority Leader Tom DeLay, R-Texas, both announced that no vote on the ban would be allowed — thus wiping out the protection that had safeguarded Americans for 10 years.

Expired ban on assault weapons will leave us vulnerable


Chalk up another one for the National Rifle Association. Because of the organization's enormous political influence, Congress and President Bush are poised to allow the 10-year-old federal assault-weapons ban to expire after midnight Monday. As a result, military-style firearms like semi- automatic AK-47s and Uzis will be legal again nationwide, unless banned by state or local laws.

A year from now, it will be obvious to everyone that all the horror stories about banning what have been labeled "assault weapons" were wrong. Eliminating the ban will not produce an upward surge in crime. There will be no upward surge in police killings. Gun controllers have a problem: It will be much harder for legislators and the press to take gun-control groups' apocalyptic claims seriously after they fail to materialize on such a high-profile issue.

I had to tell a co-worker today that FA was restricted in 1934 and that the weapons banned are still available today with cosmetic changes only.

Assault Weapons Ban Was Useless Anyway

With the federal assault weapons ban sunsetting on Monday at midnight, the gun-control movement has a lot to fear, but not what most people think. Despite claims that letting the 10-year-old ban on some semiautomatic weapons expire will result in a surge in gun crimes and police killings, the fact is that letting the law expire will probably just show the uselessness of gun-control regulations. A year from now it will be obvious to everyone that all the horror stories about the ban — a cornerstone of the gun-control movement — were wrong.

Life without the ban is being painted as a frightening state of affairs. Sarah Brady, one of the nation's leading gun-control advocates, warns that "our streets are going to be filled with AK-47s and Uzis."

Ratcheting up the fear factor to an entirely new level, Sen. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) claims the ban is one of "the most effective measures against terrorism that we have."

Yet, despite the rhetoric, there is not a single published academic study showing that the ban has reduced any type of violent crime. Even research funded by the Justice Department under the Clinton administration concluded only that the ban's effect on gun violence "has been uncertain." When those same authors released their updated report in August looking at crime data up through 2000 — the first six full years of the law — they stated, "We cannot clearly credit the ban with any of the nation's recent drop in gun violence."

The reason for these findings is simple: There is nothing unique about the guns that are banned under the law. Though the phrase "assault weapon" conjures up images of the rapid-fire machine guns used by the military, in fact the weapons covered by the ban function the same as any semiautomatic hunting rifle; they fire the exact same bullets with the exact same rapidity and produce the exact same damage as hunting rifles.

The firing mechanisms in semiautomatic and machine guns are completely different. The entire firing mechanism of a semiautomatic gun has to be gutted and replaced to turn it into a machine gun. This law had nothing to do with machine guns.

In recent weeks, at least one gun-control group has begun to change its tune. A spokesperson for the Violence Policy Center said, "If the existing assault weapons ban expires, I personally do not believe it will make one whit of difference one way or another in terms of our objective, which is reducing death and injury and getting a particularly lethal class of firearms off the streets. So if it doesn't pass, it doesn't pass." The center argues that the law involved only "minor changes in appearance."

Why the sudden conversion? Probably because the group knows its credibility is on the line.

A year from now, when it becomes obvious to everyone that all the hype about a resurgence of "assault weapons" was wrong, gun-control advocates want to be able to claim that they never thought the law really mattered.

Too bad they didn't admit this a decade ago.

Oh my God! We're all doomed. If this ban sunsets, kids will get massacred in schools, terrorists will gun down crowds of people in malls and at sporting events. Violent felons will be able to walk into gun stores and buy whatever they want. Gang members will be able to get full auto Uzis with 200-round mags.

Oh, wait. The assault weapons ban didn't prevent anything like that from happening before. There are already laws against Murder, Assault, and possesion of firearms by children. The demand for guns will never go away. It seems to me that if legal gun ownership went away, it would open the demand for illegal guns. They could buy them from the same place all the cocaine comes from. The Colombians. Then, instead of a Tec-9 that barely works and has never been maintained, criminals could get a well maintained Galil that was taken off a dead Colombian soldier. Or maybe a genuine Russian AKM from the FARC.

Are these people really stupid enough to believe that criminals can't get guns?

I'm gonna stay inside where I'll be safe.  Maybe I'll go out on my balcony and watch the smoke rise from the eastern horizon, where Philly is, thirty-five miles away and try not to think too hard about all the blood and carnage.

They have NO IDEA what the ban actually covered -- the propaganda and lies actually worked on them:  they probably think AR-15s and AK semi clones are illegal to sell right now.  Many of them may even think that machineguns will be legal again come monday (couldn't I only dream)
