2 Ercks. Tighten till it goes "erck", and then a little more so it goes "erck" again. The stock is now torqued!

Tighten it until its snug then 1/4 turn more. That's it. No need to over do it.

re: Barrel torque
The torque spec is almost meaningless. If you hit the torque spec and the barrel nut isn't lined up so you can get the gas tube through, you have to move it (barrel nut) one way or the other. I just go "tight" up till one of the holes line up. If I had to guess how tight that is, I'd say around 25-50 ft-lbs. Also, I tighten the nut (makes sure the barrel is fully seated in the upper) then back it off and tighten it again to alignment. You don't want it loose, but you don't want to over torque it either. At any rate, a number value is just a relative guideline. And, use grease on the upper receiver threads. It helps! |

think that post related only to barrel tightening, not buttstock....however, if you install a Magpul stock, that does need to be "aligned" so that the butt of the weapon is oriented properly since the buffer tube dictates the orientation of the stock...at least on the M93A |

According to TM 9-1005-319-23, the M4's buffer tube is torqued to 40 +/- 2 inch pounds.

To answer the question about the buffer tube.... seriously.... just get it snug. It aint rocket science. You cannot screw it up. You thread it in til it holds the buffer detent, then tighten the CAR/Castle nut until it's snug. Some people like to use a dab of BLUE (not red) loctite on the CAR nut so it wont back off, as they tend to do that from time to time.

Depends if your rifle has a F/S or not 14ftlbs if it does 24lftlbs if is has'nt.

Done this a lot...
1) no grease 2) locktite (service removable!!!) one or two drops 3) tighten by hand until you can feel it is tight. no torque wrench required. Ain't that simple? |

Crank it until it is "snug". Crank to next index. Done. (Spec 34-37 ft lbs, which is NOT MUCH!) Buttstock: Crank until it is "snug". add 1/4 turn. "Snug" = resistance on wrench if you try to loosen it. |
