Used to have the soundtrack on 8 track tape - that's about all I can remember about it.

It was done tastefully and I've always liked it.  No heresy IMO.

I was knee-high to a bullfrog when that was released.  I never had any interest in seeing it.  After your review, I very well may take the time to do so.

Thanks.

Before my time, and it looks so dated from stills that I have seen that I really don't have any interest in watching it.

On the other hand I can't wait for Spider-Man 2 on DVD.

That album is the earliest musical memory I have...I was born in 1970...I think my parents still have the LP....they just don't have anything to play it on!

Welllll.  I'm not sure about that question.

But damn, you're old.  You probably even remember Roman Gabriel as a quarterback AND an actor.

I remember my pastor ranting and raving about this album from the pulpit.
Then going home and listening to it again and again.
It WAS great music, but the message was a little ambivalent.

"Prove to me that you're no fool...walk accross my swimming pool.
If you do that for me, then I'll let you go free.
C'mon, King of the Jews."

The lead singer from Deep Purple sang the part of Jesus. "Gethsemane (sp?)" is still a pretty moving song for THIS backsliding Baptist.

I saw the original Off Broadway play.  Uplifting.

Outstanding music and story.

I have the CD and listen to it often. I don't think it's blaspehemous, but I'm Catholic, so what do I know?

i rejected listening to it earlier because I filed it away with "Pinklo hippy shit". But it's pretty cool

Good grief...I haven't seen the movie since it was released in theatres.

Sis had the album and loved it. But I haven't heard it in decades either.

May have to go look for the DVD.

We cower in our shelters,
With our hands over our ears.
Lloyd-Webber's awful stuff
Runs for years and years and years.
An earthquake hits the theater,
But the operetta lingers.
Then the piano lid comes down
And breaks his fucking fingers.
It's a miracle.

Tell me what you think
About your friends at the top
Now who d'you think besides yourself
Was the pick of the crop?
Buddah was he where it's at?
Is he where you are?
Could Muhammmed move a mountain
Or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that?
Was that a mistake or
Did you know your messy death
Would be a record breaker?

Although newly released this week, we picked up our copy for a whopping $10.88 at Hastings which has a web site.

Thanks TJ.

I had the vinyl as well. It was the Ian Gillian (Jesus) and Murray Head (Judas) version, I suppose it was from broadway. I thought the album kicked butt compared to performance in the movie. I think the only original cast member to make it to the movie was Yvonne Ellerman(sp) as Mary Magdalan.

I liked the machine guns in the movie.

Hair and Godspell were wannabes.

Ok, so I really DID hear echoes of "Highway Star" whenever JC belted out a tune!

This was my all-time favorite musical! I've owned this on LP, 8-track, cassette, CD, VHS and DVD. (It was released on DVD several years ago and I bought it then, this latest is just a re-release. ) But to make me feel really old, my dad used to play it all the time on...

My favorite lyrics of all time, proof that Jesus was a conservative!!

JUDAS:
Woman your fine ointment, brand new and expensive
Could have been saved for the poor.
Why has it been wasted? We could have raised maybe
Three hundred silver pieces or more.
People who are hungry, people who are starving
Matter more than your feet and hair

JESUS:
Surely you're not saying we have the resources
To save the poor from their lot?
There will be poor always, pathetically struggling.
Look at the good things you've got.
