My prediction: Localized bitching will replace nationwide bitching. Those poor souls who are unfortunate enough to live in police states like California and Maryland will still have plenty to complain about.

Plus, as Spade mentioned, there are still a few Federal gun laws on the books that need purging.

'86 and '68 need to be abolished.  Then we can work on '34.  Then we can get rid of that '89 import ban, then i dont know.

No we can't. Do you really think the antis are going to just roll over and quit after the sunset? What I'm trying to say is, they're not going to quit and neither can we.

But I'll still be bitching about folks who say it's over LONG before it's over.  We've got a LOT of work to do before we can declare mission accomplished and move to new fronts.

The best thing I would think is the 89 ban, 86 would be hard to fight without alot of earlier victories.

I expect some overseas companies might would help in the right against the 89 import ban.

Just go for '34.  It was the foundation.  The rest will fall.

Or realistically, just go for 922(o), the CLEO sig requirement, and the 'Sporting Purposes' tests...

NICS and the FFL system can stay, they're harmless... Ditto for the NFA

It's the new MG ban and the 'sporting purposes gun ban'...

Oh, and the Sporting Purposes/89 ban is the next logical one to run thru, since it's close to the 94 ban and inneffective without it...

'86 was good except for the last second voice vote/ gavel-end-of-session trickery Dems (who controlled the House/ committees) pulled to tack on the MG ban. A perception thing- who's gonna chance their seat when elections roll around about being for MGs in ordinary citizens hands. Remember this is around time of school shooting in Cali.

This time around, no-- it's definitely going away for now.

My question is for how long it's going to stay sunsetted.  I suppose a window for accomplishing some builds is nice, but I'd rather have it DEAD.  It'll come up again next year- and if we have "President Kerry," there's a good chance we'll be in under a new ban...  Perhaps a permanent one.  Perhaps a stricter one.

It's time for some fun; we've all earned it.  However, gun owners must never allow themselves to forget what happened over the last decade.  Everything we won here can be gone, lengthened, and made worse with a penstroke.

That's why I advocate caution.  It ain't over.

It ain't ever over.

A FEDERAL, cosmetic based, AWB is dead and won't be coming back..........ever.  Since there is no way to craft a FEATURE based AWB without snaring Grandpa's huntin iron as well, we won't see one of those either at the Federal level.  As much as it makes fun reading here, no one in Washington really wants another gun ban, even that Senator from California.  Its all election year politics.

What we will see is the anti effort moving on to the States, Counties and major cities.  THIS is where the danger now lies.  If my chrystal ball was working, I suspect it would show me a Federal Court case in the not too distant future that would once and for all strike these bans down on Constitutional grounds.  Until then, we all had better start keeping an eye on our own backyards.  California like bans are lurking around several corners.

We all know that there will be other bans, it's just the nature of the beast. We appear to have won this time, but as we say in the Coast Guard...some days you fuck the bear, but most days the bear fucks you. I really do worry about getting complacent, especially during times like this when we get something on our side. They will just keep hammering at it, we all know that. Some things are just plain STUPID, like the '94 ban. Others, we sometimes seem to bitch about just because we can bitch. The '89 import ban is also stupid to me, but when we get into NFA laws, pick your fights carefully. Sometimes argueing just for the sake of argueing can be counter-productive. Anyone that's married knows that...

We do?  I don't "know" that.

This Country's legal history is absolutely STREWN with "bans" that once gone have never (and will never) come back.

Women and blacks used to be "banned" from voting in many States.  Booze used to be "banned".  Interracial marriage used to be "banned".  Stores open on Sunday, Lawyers advertising etc etc etc.  The list is literally ENDLESS.

It's one thing to be vigilant against REAL threats to our liberties, it's quite another thing to just swing wildly in the dark at ASSUMED threats.  In short, we need to turn our "iron bombs" into "smart" ones.

I very much agree my friend,  in particular with the Prohibition analogy. I hope for our sake you are correct and we never have to deal with this again. In any case, we can't let up.

Dave A has got it here, CLEO signoff requirement (though that suit went nowhere is a possible fight.

The GCA 68 may be the next best step, not removing the "sporting purposes" test exactly, but amending the bill to change "sporting" to "lawful" . I mean who could be against the LAWFUL use of firearms ? Thats an easy spin to our side.  "You say you are for the rights of  gun owners, yet you want to ban guns with a "lawful" purpose"
