My wife took my son to the doctor's office recently.
After the visit they gave her a form to fill out.
One of the questions that were asked was "Are there any firearms in the home?”
My wife left it blank. Before she left one of the girls that work there told her she missed a question.
My wife told her "No I didn't, it's none of your damned business"

God I love that woman...

That's great, I have instructed my fiance to do the same when she or her daughter go to the doc. Someone posted something similar awhile back with a bunch of good rebuttal questions for the doc I thought were great also!

Give your wife a hearty "well done!" That's one of the latest tactics from the American Academy of Pediatrics, based on Kellermans "43 times more likely to be killed if you own a gun in the home."

AAP website

More than 44 million Americans own firearms. Of the 192 million firearms owned in the United States, 65 million are handguns. Research shows guns in homes are a serious risk to families.

A gun kept in the home is 43 times more likely to kill someone known to the family than to kill someone in self-defense.
A gun kept in the home triples the risk of homicide.
The risk of suicide is 5 times more likely if a gun is kept in the home.
Advice to parents

The best way to keep your children safe from injury or death from guns is to NEVER have a gun in the home.

Do not purchase a gun, especially a handgun.
Remove all guns present in the home.
Talk to your children about the dangers of guns, and tell them to stay away from guns.
Find out if there are guns in the homes where your children play. If so, talk to the adults in the house about the dangers of guns to their families.
For those who know of the dangers of guns but still keep a gun in the home

Always keep the gun unloaded and locked up.
Lock and store the bullets in a separate place.
Make sure to hide the keys to the locked boxes.

Was in Colorado Springs a couple in 1996 when they asked me that same question on a form for an Air Force flight physical.

I left it blank, told the doctor I wasn't going to answer the question, called the legal office and complained that they were asking questions outside the bounds of their duties. Question got pulled the next week.

Stupid question, keep fighting it every time it comes up!

When the Navy captain at Quantico (O-6 for you grunts and Air Force weenies!

) asked us that same question while he was giving the five year old his pre-school physical, I politely told him it was none of his business. You shoulda seen the look on his face. I thought he was going to have an aneurism right there. I guess he isn't used to being told to fuck off. Great part is, there ain't a damn thing he can do about it now...I've been retired for 12 years now.

Good start, but make sure you find a new doctor now, and make certain the current knows why, and that you'll tell everyone you know to avoid them - cause I'm sure that they realize a "none of your business" answer is in most cases, a "yes".

My doctor asked if I had a gun in my house. I think its because he hunts with a TC 30-30 pistol and wanted to make sure he still had the more macho deer gun

She's pretty understatnding about my toys, and in fact I just built an AR for my son at her request!
She will be looking for a diffrent doctor, but this is not the first office to give her the same form.

Every year doctors KILL more than 300,000 people thru "medical misadventure" , infection or complications from their mistakes. A better question would be, Do you have any doctors in the house?

My pediatrician asked me if we had guns in the house when my daughter had a checkup.

I asked him if he had kiddie porn in his house. He said "Excuse me!? I don't see the meaning of that. This is a question we ask to help parents understand the risks of dangerous objects in the home."

I said "My question was too".

He got flustered and walked away and asked the receptionist to finish up with us. We haven't returned to his office since.

My wife is a physician here in central MA, and has to ask the dreaded question. She refuses to discuss the policy with me, other than to say it is mandated by her employers, the state, or some such, and she has no choice. (Last time I asked, we got in a fight about it...

)

FWIW none of our family's doctors, all of whom are ultra-libs (they all give money to Teddy and JFK the Lesser frequently) have ever asked me that question. Maybe my missus told them, "Don't ask him that question...."

My doctor already knows the answer to that question. We are both pro gun and have discussed it. He has three little boys and he has guns in his home. My daughter was raised around guns and now my grandson will learn to be a responsible gun owner and shooter.
