I have buddy who wants to take me hunting. I'm really excited about this, cuz I don't know jack about hunting and I really want to get into it.  So, any suggestions?  Oh yeah, I don't want something that extremely pricey, but I don't want to buy a POS.  I something that'll do the job and I won't have to worry about reliability--like my DISSY!

LOL...you mean the 18" Police Model will do the trick?  Seriously, what model and what barrel length?

Define pricey?

Beretta 391 ulrika

Or my newest purchase Beretta Silver Pigeon II 20 ga.

BTW, you don't really need a 12 ga for upland bird hunting. But enjoy yourself!

Remington 12 gauge 870 synthetic super magnum with the 26" barrel. for maximum versatility buy an 18" cylinder barrel and a rifled slug barrel. you can now hunt pretty much anything and have a fine defense weapon at the same time. the stock super magnum (which shoots 2.75, 3, and 3.5 in shells) will cost you no more than $300 plus tax and will operate without problems for the rest of your natural life.

The 391 Urika in 20 ga would be super.
The Siver Pigeon in 20 ga is also great.
Rem 870 in 12 or 20 is never a bad choice.

You can get a Remingotn 870 Express Magnum 28" bbl right now at any The Sports Authority/Gart- Sports/Ohmans/Sportmart for 229.99. Plus Remingotn has a 25 dollar rebate on any express model. This is the go to shotgun. Ive got one, but I use my 1187 much more. Planning on getting an O/U right now.
As THellURider has, I am gonna get a Beretta Silver Pigeon 2.

In my opinion you can't go wrong with a Remington 870. Simple, Reliable, cheap, effective. For hunting birds, I'd get a 26" barrel.

I have a 26" 12 gauge 870 Express Synthetic that has not failed me once yet. I love it.

Have a mossberg 590 26" and it's great - but it's a pump.

Just got a Traditions Arms ALS 2100 (auto) Home defense model for <$300 and it's quality and fit are very impressive.  You can buy lots of different lengths barrels for it (just look on the website).

www.traditionsfirearms.com/eShop/shotguns.asp

It's also the lightest semi-auto available.

edited to add that they have good wood furniture too...  Check it out!
