I haven't seen this posted before, thought it was pretty cool.

TAMPA, FL - Springfield Armory recently honored Four-Star General Tommy Franks with two one-of-a-kind Springfield firearms.

Gen. Franks served as Commander in Chief, United States Central Command from June, 2000 until his retirement August 1, 2003. He commanded Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq.

"Gen. Franks is a truly great American. He has done so much for all of us in the battle against terror." Springfield Co-Chairman of the Board Dennis Reese said. "We feel that by honoring him, in some way we honor all the other great Americans that have served under him."

The guns presented were embellished versions of two of the hottest new firearms in the industry, Springfield's Micro-Compact 45-caliber pistol and the new SOCOM 16 version of their M1A rifle. Both bear Frank's name, four gold stars, custom serial numbers and other embellishments. The Springfield M1A is the civilian version of the military's M-14, which was issued to Gen. Franks when early in his military career.

Reese said that he hopes the elegant appearance of these custom guns will not keep Gen. Franks from getting full enjoyment out of them. "Don't let the beautiful exteriors fool you," he said. Underneath it all, they are Springfields, and that means they were made to be shot."

Gen. Franks was truly impressed with the new additions to his firearms collection. "Abosolutely beautiful," he said. "I've loved you guys for years, and now I know why."

You prolly want that brake instead on  a .308 that short.

That pistol is great!  The rifle is kind of boring, though.

I'm not a SA pistol nut, but doesn't the XML look a bit cheesy ?

It may look a little dull, but the SOCOM 16 is a blast to shoot.

Nope, what you want is a flash suppressor.  No 7.62*51 rifle kicks enough to requrie a brake.  Mark my words, brakes will disappear (except for state bans) from new guns on Sept 14.  They were only placed there for the 'look'.

Those are some ugly guns.  Perhaps he should have waited a week, and DSA could have made him a proper FAL...

I disagree.

I know some people who think 7.62 kicks too much.

Depends on the person.

Awhile back, I shot an M1A, with a brake, man the anti-gunners really did you favor, you can hardly feel the recoil in the thing.

You should have seen my ex wife's uncle trying to sight in his .308 bolt gun. 50lb bag of rabbit feed as a rest, and a 50lb bag on his lap in between the rifle and his shoulder.   Couldn't stand the recoil. I'd never shot a .308 so I asked to try, sans the "shoulder pad'. I ended up sighting it in for him.

It would probably have more mil-spec parts on it than what Springfield is putting out.

I think that was a great, and well deserved, gesture by Springfield.

That man's service to his country is something to be honored and remembered.

Back east??

Dude, he was born an raised in Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is back East.

He does make the rifle look small though doesn't he.  Big enough to not need a brake.

My Navy Reserve unit tried for 5 years to get rifle ahooting.  (We mobilized to Subic and many would have been assigned to "Provisional Rifle Brigade".  Once things went to poop in the late 80s the powers that be finally decided to be benevolent and train us on rifles.    One of the guys brought his AR in a few times the months before for those that hadn't seen an M-16 to get a little hands on and familiarity.  You should have seen the looks on the faces when we got to the range at Pt. Mugu and they brought out M-14s.  (Expert of course, thanks for asking)
